Mt Fernie, Batmans Avy

hamishhepburn96, Wednesday 19th April, 2023 5:40PM

Planetary peak avalanche

dirtrider121, Saturday 8th April, 2023 4:10PM

SE of Fernie's Timberline

Wherever wind could fill out a N aspect, we rode 5-15cm of snow atop a crust. Snowfall had changed to graupel for about fifteen minutes, twice during the tour. A hasty pit on two wind affected locations on N aspects did not reveal signs of instability: the snow had not consolidated to slabs.

Adam Kowalczewski, Saturday 1st April, 2023 7:50PM

Mount Fernie

Skied as much as we could on the shady aspect of the track and trees where the snow was more powdery. More crusty as we descended and on the sunny aspects. Top layer wasn’t bonding much to the underlying surface as mentioned by forecast. What looked to be a size 2.5/3 wet loose on the skiers left side in the sun from before today as it was covered in overnight drifts.

goforjonah, Sunday 26th March, 2023 5:00PM

Middle Sister Whiteout

Lovely day out touring in the Three Sisters area. Felt very much like a classic spring ski day while running the whole gammut of weather (sunny and warm to foggy and snowing) and snow surface conditions. No obvious signs of instability noted although there was one recent glide slab avalanche (size 2) from a steep rock slab at ~2300m on a SE aspect (suspected from earlier in the week with additional cracks showing adjacent to the start zone).

zacharystephenmiller89, Saturday 25th March, 2023 4:20PM

Waiting for corn to bloom

We set out for an unnamed summit at 2285m and skied out the Rocky Road Bowl. Walked up the Mt. Fernie drainage. Pretty heinous skinning on shaded slopes, much easier as snow warmed. Saw a lot of evidence of wet loose slides 24hrs+ and one slab release from a cornice fall. Skied out by 1300 and triggered small wet loose slides on a steep solar aspect. Snow was good in protected areas and as sun warmed slopes, a cool wind slowed the warming in the alpine.

connadam, Thursday 23rd March, 2023 7:10PM

Spring melt has started

Went out to Powder Cowboy today. Snow was dry on north aspects but had been previously hit by the wind. Anything that the sun touched had a melt freeze crust on top. It was starting to soften on steep sections when we left, but not enough for fun riding yet. We saw a few natural wet loose avalanches from yesterday that had started in steep, rocky SW spots and gathered snow as they went. Up to size 2. No slab avalanches seen. The riding quality wasn't great but we didn't see any signs of instability.

southrockies, Wednesday 22nd March, 2023 2:30PM

Ridge 2000 (full)

Crossed Fish Bowl from top of Gobbler's Knob, over towards Ridge 2000. Snowboarders had a harder time crossing even at 10am with warming temperatures and wetter snow. They got sucked down further than myself skiing. The drop into Fish was pretty skied out, but on the northeast aspect with nice snow. Yesterday (Saturday the 18th), when lapping Gobbler's Knob in bounds, I saw that there was natural loose/wet running into the traverse across in upper Fish that had let go at some point. Not sure when, possibly the previous day, as I was there from 1idh to 3ish. After crossing Fish Bowl, we utilized the very worn in skin track. When we got to the top, we left our skis/boards, but took our bags and poles and followed the bootpack up to the top for the 360 bluebird view. This was around 12pm. The temps were very warm, but nothing was naturally letting loose in Liverwurst or Fish (But there were natural loose/wet slides coming down the main bowl of Liverwurst that had occurred in the previous days, as well as a crown from a slab that let go, much higher up from the rocky ridge transition). For our descent, we rode the main ridge down and had a few southwest turns in the open trees. It was wet, but smooth and creamy. It felt stable. We then dropped the northeast aspect (no photos, just have video footage) into light powder, with plenty of line options still untouched. Very visible loose/wet avalanches had occurred lower in Fish Bowl (terrain trap area) within the last few days.

jena.greaser, Sunday 19th March, 2023 8:00PM

Thunder Meadows from Polar Peak

Had a great tour from Polar peak to Thunder Meadows hut. Multiple avalanches from Monday’s storm observed along the way. Most notably a natural size 2 likely trigger from cornice fall in Polaris bowl. Debris from a large wet loose avalanche was observed in Hilda’s trees gully feature on our way out on Saturday (2.5?) Great skiing into Polaris bowl and Orca bowl in the Alpine and treeline. Spring diurnal in full effect on solar aspects and wind buffed surface conditions near ridge top on windward aspects.

m.lewis434, Saturday 18th March, 2023 1:30PM

Mt Fernie and Fairy Meadows

We were up skiing in behind Mt Fernie and Fairy Meadows area. We didn't observe any avalanches through the day, but saw evidence of multiple recent slab avalanches in the alpine and at treeline in steep terrain, with some running the entire length of a bowl. There were also several large cornices on N and E aspects. We had great skiing on about 15cm of loose snow on top of firm wind slab above about 1600m. Below that there was a somewhat challenging melt-freeze crust.

bryson.m, Wednesday 15th March, 2023 7:30PM

BIG Slide in Big Steep Mother

Fun day of ski touring in the Lizard Range. Most features we skied slide naturally during the previous storm and the cooling tightened up the instability. No signs of instability other than a couple whumpfs/cracks on steep solar aspects, which we were avoiding.

mattszczepanski.ms, Wednesday 15th March, 2023 6:30PM

Mongolia Bowl

Weather changed from high thin overcast to full overcast with some light snow (S-1) by 3pm. Winds were calm to light out the southwest. We found some wind-affected snow from the prior 24 hrs period along the ridgelines, and scouring was evident on the upper northerly faces of Mammoth Head. We found small isolated pockets of stubborn to reactive wind slabs. A significant sun crust 3-4cm thick and semi-supportable exists on SE-S-SW facing terrain Near Tree Line and Above. This crust has 5cm of low-density new snow above and a thin layer of (1cm) of faceted snow below. Sitting below the facets are decomposing fragments and a preserved layer of graupel 6-10cm thick depending on the slope angle. This structure may become an issue if buried by a storm event and loaded further by wind. Northerly facing terrain sheltered from the recent NE wind event is still riding well and capped by a nice dusting of new snow.

seanzdub, Saturday 11th March, 2023 10:00PM

Crosswinds galore

Weather and av forecast pretty bang on where we were. Mod-Strong E winds were building windlabs in real time. We stayed away from the crossloaded ridge feature and skied some nice bouncy hero snow on a more sheltered slope.

Stayfunie, Friday 10th March, 2023 1:50PM

'Creme brulee' turns in Mongolia

Toured the Northern-most ridge (closest to resort) in Mongolia. Colder day than expected, the clouds stuck around into early afternoon, then mostly sunny with scattered clouds. Light wind. Rode soft, deep powder on the North aspect. Rode 'creme brulee' snow on the South - very thin sun? crust with soft snow underneath. No signs of instability. Rode in the trees, stayed away from open sunny slopes. Observed very few low-key pinwheels on the SW aspect climbing up. Saw two to three size 1-2 loose snow avalanches, perhaps a few days old, on an open/sparsely treed, South facing slope exiting the bowl. Avoided that. Lots of tracks on both sides of the bowl.

snack.outdoors, Wednesday 8th March, 2023 8:40AM

Mount Fernie East

Thin and weak snowpack on a West aspect we climbed. Recent snow was poorly bonded to the old surface (harder, wind pressed snow). Shallow, HS ~ 90-130 cm, and a faceted lower snowpack. Scurried away as quickly as we could. Found good skiing on N-E aspects. Southerly aspects now have a 2-3 cm breakable sun crust and very poor skiing.

npin, Monday 6th March, 2023 7:20PM

2000 Ridge

Great day out on 2000 ridge. 10-15cm new snow since yesterday, combined with the week's accumulation made for excellent ski quality. Observed several point releases, some seemed to be initiated near trees by solar input and most resulted in slow moving sluff. Noted similar recent activity looking across to Liverwurst ridge. Some ski turns also resulted in slow moving sluff that was easily out-waited or avoided. Calm/light wind throughout the day. The recent snow did not seem to be forming slabs and we did not observe any propagation or signs of recent slab avalanches. Chose to transition at ~1750m based on possibility of yesterday's wind activity affecting the underlying snow. Sun was strong at times but didn't last long enough through the mid-day to create significant surface moisture or sun crust. Several other groups out in the area.

BubblegumOutlaw, Saturday 4th March, 2023 9:20PM

Down low on 2000 ridge

Avalanche Summary: No observations due to poor visibility. Our group suspected overhead hazards of cornices and wind slab development at upper elevations in open terrain features and selected low-angle sheltered terrain. Storm snow started settling at the end of the day with cracking off the front of the ski. Snowpack summary: 20 cm of low-density accumulated over the past 24 hours added to the 20 cm of soft snow accumulated earlier in the week totaling 40 cm. This most recent snow sits on an old wind slab that is bonding to previous surfaces. (Resistant and breaks snowpack test results). Well-consolidated mid-pack with total snowpack depth at treeline 280 to 300 cm. Weather: Snowfall throughout the day, heavy at times, accumulation 20 cm. Moderate to westerly winds with strong gusts. Treeline temperatures -5 °C.

lisalarson00, Thursday 2nd March, 2023 7:30PM

Tunnel Creek

South aspects were affected by the morning sun, snow was heavy. As we moved towards east aspects the riding quality improved, snow was lighter. Wind was picking up throughout the day. Could see some signs of small natural releases on steep east aspects particularly in the alpine, but also a small one from the group in front of us lower done (see picture)

james25miles, Thursday 2nd March, 2023 8:00AM

Mongolia tour

Good riding from the ridges into Molgolia on both sides, far side with more north aspect was best. Surface snow was very light and not slabby at all, around shin deep in most place, some spots a little deeper. No signs of recent slab avalances, however multiples loose dry sluffs had realesed naturally as well as from our selves. These ran a significant length on the steeper slopes and picked up a bit of snow as they went but all below size 1.

Liverwurst and 2000m

tomwhipple4, Monday 27th February, 2023 9:10PM

2000 Ridge

We worked out way up 2000 Ridge and found significant wind effect and hard crust above 1800m. Below 1800m we had great power just off the north side of the ridge and on the south side at the bottom heading back into Fish Bowl.

bryson.mclellan, Sunday 26th February, 2023 7:20PM

2000 Ridge

Today we kept things simple due to the cold weather. While in the Fernie backcountry, we observed a few size 1 and 2 storm slabs in Liverwurst that were released during Tuesday’s cycle. Below 1200 m we found a supportive crust that made for a challenging up-track but above that things improved quickly. As we got closer to the treeline the storm snow was right side up and made for pretty good turns. We continually assessed for slab properties as we gained elevation and avoided wind-loaded features.

southrockies, Wednesday 22nd February, 2023 4:00PM

Upper fish bowl avalanche

Looked to be size 2. Witnessed from west ridge of fishbowl.

akfindlay27, Wednesday 15th February, 2023 8:10PM

Proctor

Mixed bag of weather and snow conditions. Previously formed sun crust on direct solar slopes, buried by 3 cm new snow. New snow became moist on solar slopes in the afternoon. Ski quality was still very good on sheltered, shady slopes. No result testing the old wind slab with a cornice chunk at tree line.

npin, Monday 13th February, 2023 7:00PM

Mt Procter

Surprisingly great skiing off Procter’s saddle and down through the drainage, boot top powder. We noticed wind slab sitting on a smooth sun crust even in tiny lee features. Keeping to windward and more planar slopes we found some great, well-supported turns.

espeters10, Saturday 11th February, 2023 7:40PM

2000 Ridge

Great day out on 2000 ridge. Strong gusting winds from S/SW throughout the day. Stayed at and below treeline. Notable wind affect but not enough to impact ski quality where we skied. Surface of solar aspects was wet around noon and found refrozen crust on the same aspects when exiting.

BubblegumOutlaw, Saturday 11th February, 2023 5:30PM

Liver Wurst Drainage

We did Multiples laps on the area (1800 D+) and decided to exit by Liver Wurst drainage. We stopped 50 m above the entrance of the Drainage (alt. 1350 m), just top of the last roll to decide the better way to exit (Drainage or stay on the trees above). I went on the last slope, did 2 meters and heard a "pop" and see a fracture below my skis. My partner yelled at me too. I saw that it was a full feature and I straight line toward the bottom of the slope. I was able to ski and pass the moving snow, and stop on a safe spot. The Debris Stopped quickly at the bottom of the slope.

cedric.dubief, Saturday 11th February, 2023 7:00AM

Friday Tunnel

Looking to ride Mondo (NE run off race car notch) but were turned away due to heavy loading and little strength in the snow pack mid way through the run. We rode the race car ridge down (open trees, N) and went up for a homerun lap. Both slopes felt silky and strong with some nice boottop pow.

espeters10, Friday 10th February, 2023 8:40PM

Very windy

Moderate to strong W-SW winds at ridgetop but variable at times. Sun popped out for a bit today, definitely some sun affect on solars and spring like conditions below. Moist on the surface below ~1450m. Avoided loaded areas. Numerous Na’s in the past storm to size 2.5 and some Na cornices. One skier accidental more details in the avalanche section.

conniehenderson3, Friday 10th February, 2023 5:30PM

1st Peak was 1st Class !

Great day out today in the Big Sand area, sledded up to 1700m, from where we continued climbing on our skis up through soft snow, amongst heavily rimed trees to ridgeline at 2,000 m. Snowpack depth at treeline was 2 metres, but thinned out dramatically on our descent after about 1650 m. At ridgeline and in open areas at treeline, the upper snowpack consisted of two or three layers of soft windslab, each up to 15 cm thick. We weren’t able to ski cut 'em, but they were evident in hand-shears. With good visibility into the Alpine, we were able to see evidence of previous strong winds, but no natural avalanches. It stayed cool at treeline, with light to moderate SW winds and overcast skies; while temps in the valley climbed to well above zero.

AST 1 lost boys pass

We found the crust using our probe at 80cm under the surface. In pass - snowpack 180cm. Facets at bottoms.

No lift lines when you take the heel toe express

Quick little exploratory ski up and over into mongolia bowl. Skied some nicer heavy powder in open trees on the way out, and then ventured out of the sheltered trees into mammoths droppings next to the skin track on the way back. Nothing of note besides some decent skiing away from the crowds

Mammoth Head Tour

Kyle Beaudry, Saturday 4th February, 2023 5:00PM

SW Mammoth's Head

We skied through Lost Boys and up behind Mammoth's Head. We didn't observe any recent avalanches and found a mix of wind affected snow in open areas and up to 25cm of powder in protected areas. We conducted an ECT with no fracture on a 35 degree slope at 1950m on the SE side of the shoulder. There was 15cm of loose powder on top and a hard 7cm crust down 85cm. We were able to mostly avoid the wind affected areas and had a great ski back down the W side of the shoulder.

bryson.mclellan, Saturday 4th February, 2023 2:20PM

AST 1 Field Day

We were on an AST 1 Field Day with StayWild Backcountry. We observed wind affected snow and M, westerly winds at the top of Lost Boys Pass. We primarily stuck to the tress for our session and found 10-15 cm of recent storm snow on old surfaces. We did not observe any recent slab avalanches with the good visibility today.

madeline.martin, Thursday 2nd February, 2023 9:00PM

Race Car

We toured up to Race Car Rock and found surprisingly good skiing below treeline and sheltered treeline, with up to 10cm of new snow on roughly 15cm of low density faceted snow. The wind picked up around lunch time and was gusting strong at ridge-top. It was -13.0 at the cabin and -10.0 at the road. The ski out was also in good shape.

info, Tuesday 31st January, 2023 8:30PM

Low Ridge 2000

Skied lower Fish bowl from Ridge 2000. Evidence of recent size 1-2 avalanches in lower Fish, which appear to have been naturally triggered. Found about 15-20cm of powder on top of a crust. Minimal wind affected snow, and no wind slab.

AlexWray, Monday 30th January, 2023 4:50PM

Outer Siberia Ridge AST2

We skinned up from Falling Star along the edge of the trees to the saddle. One other group above us. We then skinned NE up to top of ridge. Dug a large snow pit on NW side of ridge. Snowpack depth 195 cm. Snowpack essentially as expected from regional snowpack data. Dug a smaller pit on SE side of ridge. Snowpack depth about 150 cm. Thicker facet layer at base of snowpack. Traversed out of trees and skied down the edge of Mammoth Droppings back to resort.

dml99, Monday 30th January, 2023 4:50PM

AST 2 Mammoth

We travelled from Lost Boys up to the shoulder of Mammoth and then skied back down and up to Lost Boys. It was a clear, cold day with light wind. Surprisingly pleasant given the temperature. Heavily wind affected snow surface at all elevations and surface faceting. We saw 2 natural wind slab avalanches 1-1.5. The first one looked to be about 24-48 hrs old and was 50cm deep, 20m, and was hard slab that bent over some trees. The second avalanche happened during our tour today. A tree covered in rime broke, fell into an avalanche path, and initiated a wind slab avalanche (shown in photo) that was about 15-30cm deep.

info, Sunday 29th January, 2023 4:10PM

Ridge 2000

Pretty hollow up on/close to the ridge. Very mediocre skiing down into Liverworst, (we thought it would’ve been sheltered. It wasn’t) patches of thick wind slab mixed with powder made for a frustrating descent. The gorgeous blue skies and light wind made up for it.

espeters10, Sunday 29th January, 2023 2:00PM

Tunnel Circuit

A great day for a long tunnel ski, we did a loop through McDermott-mercury basins. We got a good look at most aspects and can confirm that everything has some form of wind effect on it at treeline and very little is unaffected in the alpine. We stuck to mellow slopes and found very little good skiing other then Homerun which to always seems be in good shape?

espeters10, Sunday 29th January, 2023 1:50PM

Unsurprisingly wind-slabby

Took a quick peek at lost boys pass. Unsurprisingly ++ windy and there was tons of wind slab, fairly thick in places.. Fairly cautious on the descent, some powder in sheltered trees but mostly remarkably wind affected snow.

canadianrockyskibike, Saturday 28th January, 2023 6:20PM

Little Sand better than expected

Skiing was excellent on fantastic snow quality at elevations below 1900m. 25cm of right side up on a supportive layer. Hand pit suggested the layer was thin and crumbly, snow above was adhering well. Wind slabs forming on upper layer above 1900 in open / alpine area. No signs of instability. Very foggy and hard to see when out of the trees.

jimn, Wednesday 25th January, 2023 7:00PM

Tunnel - Treed/Sunnyside/Slide

Tunnel area is riding great, stuck to mellow terrain even with safer conditions. No reactivity, some wind affected areas showing on Sunday. No issues with punching through crust and a a few cm’s of powder on top made for a great couple of days.

Aidan Faught, Friday 20th January, 2023 7:10PM

South of the South was Great !

Great day out in the McDermid drainage today, at the South end of the South Rockies. We had good skiing in up to 15 cm of dry snow on a supportive crust. There was progressively less snow as we descended, and the crust more pronounced, but it was good going from our high point of 2100 m down to our staging at 1600m. The day was overcast, but with great visibility, we observed lots of terrain and didn’t see any natural activity, or any signs of instability. We did note some sizable cornices on the ridge at 2100 m, and will be watching for them to grow if the wind comes up and starts transporting the loose dry surface snow.
