Quick Observation
Incredible surprise powder weekend in Fernie, and we made the most of it by going into Mongolia Bowl on Sunday. Observing the avalanche Canada report, one of the key things to watch out for was sun-effective snow on all aspects aside from North. We reached the top of Mongolia from Mammoth Drops around 12 pm and noticed a significant change in temperature from shade to sun. When we got to the top, we could see balls of rolling snow fall down the snow, and you could tell that the sun was just starting to have an effect on the snowpack. We quickly made our way to the bottom of Mongolia Bowl through the lookers right side, with the face being more supported and a bit more open, ready to go up the second ridge. We stuck to shaded areas for the rest of the walk. Riding from the second ridge back down into the main Mongolia Bowl was awesome, bottomless powder with open trees. It was a wicked run. The sun hadn’t seemed to play any effect on the side of the slope. We walked back up to Mongolia Ridge and then skied the open face into mammoth droppings, one of the best runs of the season so far.
