Core Lodge

Beautiful day to be in the mountains! The parking lots was warm and sunny and the trail in was hard and crusty. It was 4.5 degrees when we stopped for lunch at the back meadows and the sun struggled to poke out later in the day. The winds averaged from light in sheltered areas to moderate up in the alpine coming from the south, south-west. We managed to find about 10-15cm of untouched snow on N and NE facing slopes in the back as well. We hadn’t seen any recent avalanche activity on our travels or new activity as the day warmed up

Pocket Hunting

Core Lodge was it's usually windy self today. We saw westerly winds transporting snow onto East to North facing slopes. As a result there were isolated pockets of wind slab below ridge crests that we stayed mindful of. But the small pockets we tested, with sleds, didn't budge. So we felt comfortable riding in big open tree line slopes where we could find some soft dry snow left over from the weekend.

Core lodge area

Made a run in a north facing area near the Core Lodge. Any snow down low in the shade is still powder, but wherever the sun has hit it is crusty. The alpine is wind hammered, even on the lee NE facing slopes. No instability noted.

Hasler

Riding near Aluminum Bowl. Did a quick short across climb where there was 2 other tracks going up over the small saddle. Turned around to come back down and this small slide came down about 10-15 seconds after I had went thru. There was about 6-8” of fresh in top of a hard icy layer.

Unexpected Sunshine

Great day out on skis today for a field day! The sun came out a lot more than forecast and we had bluebird conditions most of the day that made the -15 air temps feel much warmer. We stuck to mostly flat terrain below tree line for the day; and didn’t see any recent slab avalanches on any aspects. However we did get multiple propagation failures in our snowpit, and could ski cut small drifts and cornices that were wind exposed.

Chunks Ahoy!

Things are waiting for a refresh at Core Lodge. Shifting winds have blasted upper elevations leaving hard surfaces and little snow to blow around. We saw no signs of new slab avalanches but a large cornice chunk has fallen testing the slope below. This is an excellent look at how the basal problems are reacting to large triggers. This cornice fall, combined with weeks of careful observation and sled cuts in small, cross loaded terrain, allowed us to cautiously set out into bigger and bigger terrain. The March sun felt good despite today’s cold temperates which, thankfully, kept the snowpack cool and dry. We stepped out into large alpine terrain and had fun putting up high marks in the sun.

Snow Thunder

Large slide heard and felt from back meadows. Approx 200m wide snow dust plume blew over from indicated area 30sec after. Stay safe. Ride smart. Make it home.

Core Memories

We had an unexpected powder day at Core Lodge. The weather station had read only 1 cm this morning and our drive in from Tumbler had no signs of new snow. The parking lot at had 15 cm and as we moved south west into the riding zone, snow depths increased with a max around 45cm. Strong winds were redistributing snow along ridge lines so we changed our plans and dialled back to some fun powder riding in the trees.

northrockiesfieldteam, Thursday 16th February, 2023 7:10PM

Low expectations

Great to get out in the Perry Creek today, with a lot more snow than expected. Snow depths at tree line were 200-240 cm, with new snow drifting heavily in sheltered Lee areas. We stuck to mellow tree lines as we wanted to avoid exposure to the building wind slabs, and we saw numerous smaller signs of instability throughout the day. Winds were high to extreme as forecasted, with visibility often down to 50 m or less. Several layers of recent wind affected snow are reactive, with new snow slabs failing in the easy range and older wind slabs failing in the hard range (ECT5 SP down 10 and ECT 24 RP down 35) There’s great snow in the trees with more still coming down.

Training Day

Today we went to Core Lodge to find out how the east side of the Rockies was responding to the warm temps and strong westerly winds. We found a supportive snowpack with a melt freeze crust up to 1500m on the surface and saw cornices building on east facing ridge crests. When we dug down below tree line we found two surface hoar layers (persistent weak layers) in the upper snowpack that produced results and we confirmed that the entire snowpack sits on facets (loose large grained snow). No new avalanches were observed but due to the weak layers we found, we rode on small features below tree line and practiced our sled skills.

northrockiesfieldteam, Thursday 26th January, 2023 6:00PM

Powder on top, scary below

Skied a bowl in the Perry Creek area. Around 10 cm new snow from Tuesday on top, which skied well. Dug a pit at 1850 m in east facing glade. Hs 110 cm. At 35 cm down, there is a surface hoar layer, probably from the December cold snap. Easy to moderate test results on this layer. Bottom half of the snowpack is loose facets. Good skiing on flatter terrain because it was fast enough. Snow below treeline on the approach was terrible - mostly facets, with a raincrust near the top.

Whooped out and wind swept

Beautiful day and a great crew. Warmer temps and sunshine kept the smiles per minute going strong. We had +1 at the parking lot (1350M) in the AM with a total of 83cm of snow. The winds have scored the alpine and open areas pre-dominantly from the south west. No avalanches were observed on our travels to the hotdog stand. Conducted an extended column test at 1600m on an East facing (highly wind affected) aspect, resulted in ECTH26 18cm down on surface hoar (2-4mm). We also found CTM18 on some pesky facets. Air temps were hovering around -1 with a light wind from the SW.

Depth Hoar house of cards...

Exploratory day to seek new ski lines created by the Battleship Mtn wildfire in 09/2022. Great terrain opportunity but very low snowpack which is below threshold in certain areas BTL. 1cm temp crust (melted SH) on well consolidated HST (~30cm) on extremely weak fat layer of depth hoar to ground. Repeated CTM13 Sudden Collapse on Depth Hoar. Road plowed to km 76. Bring a chain saw, lots of danger trees still falling on Johnson FSR.

Sunshine and Sparkly Snow

Core Lodge day of sledding was sunshine, smiles and no surprises. We found some decent riding and skiing on soft supportive snow at tree line and below. Tree Line and Alpine had obvious signs of wind effect but today the winds were light and the surface hoar was growing right up to ridge crest. The weak layer buried in December was still easily visible when we dug down and producing sudden results across the entire test column.

northrockiesfieldteam, Wednesday 4th January, 2023 5:40PM

Core Lodge

Beautiful day for a ride through the willows to ring in the new year! Total snowpack was sitting around 113cm. Warmer temps varied from -0.5 to -4 throughout our tour with light winds (SW+NE; swirling in the valley) and overcast skies. We had good visibility as the cloud cover remained high. No new avalanches were observed. We ventured from valley bottom to tree line, and did not make it into Alpine (stuck to relatively low elevation; approx. 900-1400m). At 1350m in an open meadow with large trees (and willows need we mention) on a NE aspect, we found a melt freeze crust down 26cm with buried hoar frost (4-6mm in size) down at 29cm. We are not sure if this is a wide spread or isolated distribution of the surface hoar. We found that the Nov 24th melt freeze crust is starting to break down and bond with other interfaces. We noted a large temp gradient while doing observations. We conducted an extended column test and observed a fracture that did not propagate. ECTN 26 found at melt freeze crust sitting above surface hoar.

Wind crust in the alpine

We skied a bowl in the Perry Creek drainage today. Dug a pit at treeline (1700 m) on NE facing slope. Hs 125 cm. Top 10 cm is wind pressed., Light crust layers at 20 cm down and 40 down, 35 cm facets at base. Crusts weren't reactive. Good powder in the trees below the pit, but the alpine is wind hammered, as it usually is here.

ksharman, Thursday 29th December, 2022 9:50PM

Core Lodge weather station

Another weather station setup in the North Rockies! Watch temperatures plummet this week at https://avalanche.ca/weather/stations/90. We kept our trip extra conservative due to the cold weather. On a quick tour around Core Lodge we found about 100 cm of consolidated snow in wind sheltered areas.

mconlan, Saturday 17th December, 2022 5:00PM

Little Blower Pow

Great (chilly) day for an AST field day at Core Lodge. We saw between 10 and 15 cm of very light blower pow from the recent storm in the meadows around the Hotdog Stand. The snowpack is still thin, 80-130 cm but the bottom is starting to set up nicely, and we saw no reactions on any layers during the day. Great start to the season but still pretty thin everywhere, lots of holes, stumps and rocks waiting for your A Arms!
