Regions

Kootenay Boundary, Purcells, Bonnington, Grohman, Kootenay Pass, Norns, Ymir, Crawford, Kokanee, Retallack, Valhalla.

Expect challenging travel conditions; cool temperatures will limit the crust softening.

Assess slopes for slip 'n slide risk before committing.

Confidence

High

  • Confidence is due to a stable weather pattern; little change is expected for several days.

Avalanche Summary

Small wet loose avalanche activity continued on Saturday in steep south facing terrain. Avalanche activity is unlikely when there is a thick crust on the surface.

Snowpack Summary

A widespread surface crust exists. It thins and becomes less supportive as you gain elevation.

A spotty surface hoar layer from early January is buried 50 to 100 cm. This layer has not produced recent avalanche activity. The remaining snowpack is generally well-bonded, with multiple crust layers present.

Terrain and Travel Advice

  • A hard crust on the snow surface will help strengthen the snowpack, but may cause tough travel conditions.
  • This is a good time for exploring terrain.
