Just Enough to Hide the Sharks

Exploratory mission in the Bonningtons. Found rocks hiding just below the melt/freeze layer from the Dec 6 monsoon rain event. The fresh show was just enough to hide them. Watch for the sharks!

<p>Approx 5cm light fresh snow on top of a hard sun crust from the previous warm days. We observed some wind transporting onto southwest facing slopes. Lots of pinwheels on lower elevation slopes. </p>

Marble lake

<p>Temp stayed just below zero all day with light snow, heavier at end of day as we got closer to the parking lot. Probed at ~1900m on south facing slope. Total depth 190cm with crusts noticeable 50 and 80cm down. </p>

Huckleberry Hut area

<p>1800m elevation - NE aspect. 220 cm deep (near road and trees). We did a single column test. Ths new storm slab fractured at elbow 5 on Dec 17 layer and fractured at shoulder 7 on the weak layer of Nov 17. We rode low angle trees and road, conservative terrain. Riding was good, no signs of new instability. We saw some 50cm+ crowns on convex role probably a few days old. On Dec 29, 30min rain drizzle created a skinny rain crust that got snowed on overnight 2-5cm at Huckleberry hut. We could feel the tiny crust to ~1750m of elevation</p>

Bonnington Range

<p>Numerous natural avalanches to size 2 on the November 21 interface between 1850-2150m on NE—S aspects. HS was 110cm Dec 05 SH was down 45cm and the Nov 21 was down 80 with SH to size 20mm in areas travelled today.</p>
