Pretty darn good skiing considering where we were 3 days ago. Skiing well between 1100 and 1350 meters.
Snow depth 140cm at 1250m on a NE facing slope.
15cm of ski penetration on supportive deeper layers made the coverage feel ok but still lots of bushes around under tree cover.
Solar aspects some wet loose, not stepping down. No slab avalanches observed. Few ski cuts on convex rolls didn’t trigger anything.

Strong wind gusts up brockton, my tracks covered upon return, lots of accumulation already. Poor visibility. Was nice to revisit the wonderful feeling of snow pellets burning my face ;-)

No Avalanches, 60cm at Brockton
60cm at Brockton. No snow below 1100m. Trail is tough to travel, skis not recommended. Snowshoes not particularly needed. Lower Resort unskiable.
No slopes above threshold at Treeline. Did not hike past Brockton.
Wind Moderate, +5°C

Is this the East Coast? Reactive slab in Christmas Gully
Went for a stroll up Christmas Gully today. The line is kinda not really skiable. Some down climbing would be required given the open creek.
Climbed up the gully until I encountered the open creek situation in the 4th photo. The bridge seemed solid but I decided not to test my luck and followed the trail through the forest.
Found some very old and frozen wet slide debris in the upper choke point of the gully. See the photos. Didn’t see an obvious start zone from that slide.
Starting around 1100 m 2 cm of fresh snow up to 7 cm at 1350 m.
Very supportive crust up to 1200 m where it becomes mostly but not reliably supportive to bootpacking. Had crampons on from the bottom.
Noticed a snow change around 1250 m and dug a hasty pit at 1350 m. Noticed a consolidated wet slab consisting of the fresh snow and a 5-10 cm crust on top of facets. Slab released on the facets. HS 140 cm at 1350 m. Investigated further with a compression test and got a result of CTV. Slab failed while digging out the column. One note is I didn’t have a saw so maybe this had an effect but the slab went very easily nonetheless. Skiing at this elevation looked not totally horrible given the slightly softer crust and more fresh snow.
Elected to down climb given the slab and the consequence of even a small avy with the partially open creek and such.
Dug another hasty pit at 1250 m and the slab was slightly harder to trigger but still kinda sketchy.
Down climbed the trail through the forest. Its maybe skiable if you have ninja moves and a big enough pair. Then skied the bottom 100 m or so on a not really edgeable crust.
Weather was clear everywhere except Christmas Gully. Socked in the whole time and consistent but light snowfall from 1:30 onwards. Maybe 1-2 cm accumulation.
Trail isn’t skinable unless you like taking your skis off every 3 minutes.

We went so you don’t have to
You don’t know until you go, but now we know so you can, too! The lower part of the Mt. Seymour Trail is in terrible shape and is essentially a stream in parts. We turned around after about 300 m as a group coming down the trail told us the resort is currently grooming the ski runs and actively preventing people from coming inbounds. Boot packing required in several places unless you really hate your skins and skiing out the skin track would be terrible. Probably needs about 30-50cm more snow to fully fill in the lower parts of the skin track. Snow was very sticky (skins started to stick within a minute of standing still) and it was pouring at the parking lot. Not worth it!

Cream on Crust - Seymour
Tour around Brockton Point.
Consistent heavy snowfall, light and fluffy above 1100m and noticeably heavier below that. Winds scouring and depositing snow on exposed ridges.
Trail conditions poor. Needs another storm or two to cover the rocks/twigs/microspiker divots.
New snow (~10-15cm around noon) didn’t seem to be bonding well to last week’s ~10cm rain crust. Saw several shooting cracks, experienced difficult side-hill skinning, and remotely triggered the collapse of a wind-drift (pictured).

Touchy but Excellent
Beautiful day up on Cypress. Decided to stay in simple terrain due to the uncertainty about the forecast and big storm totals. Totals from Thursday/Friday storms was about 40cm in treeline, up to 55-65 cm with North aspects on the deeper side. This sits on top of layer of MfCr, 25-35cm from ground depending on location.
We observed numerous whumphing sounds in steeper micro terrain features as we got to elevations that had existing snow prior to the storm (~1250m and above). At the top of Sky chair we observed cornices forming on the North facing backside of Cypress. We attempted to get a better view of the slope but heard very large whumphing sounds down slope of us anytime we approached within 5-6m. These continued regularly while we dug a pit and transitioned in the area.
We stayed in mellow terrain within the resort boundaries and ski quality was excellent but many early season obstacles still exist (creeks, bushes, logs, etc.). Areas with more solar radiation had turned heavy and wet by our second lap of the day on Black Mountain. All in all an excellent day but would not be venturing out into more consequential terrain anytime soon.

What a Difference 24-hrs Makes
Road Conditions
Snow accumulation starts at 400m at the first switchback on the road. Mushroom Parking Lot clear of snow. Snowing at 600m at 2nd Switchback. (As of Noon)
Mountain Conditions
Have I seen it better on Dec. 1st? Yep! Is today infinitely better then yesterday? Oh yea! With any luck this base will survive next week’s Pineapple Express and we’ll be ready to go after that.
60cm of snow (HS), only travelled to 1230m

Variable Riding Conditions

Overall ride quality was good but snow quality was variable and wet overall.
Near the bottom lay about 5-10cm over a crust and refrozen tracks. Mid and near the top, there were some crusty areas with denser/wetter/grabbier snow underneath where trees were less dense and let solar through. In areas less affected by solar, snow generally felt heavy but surfy. Winds really picked up near the top, generally coming from the southeast.
A storm of wet snow started when we departed at 12:30pm. By the time we got back to our vehicle at 2pm, at least 4cm fell on it during our short 1.5 hrs day trip. Temperatures started at 1 C at 12:30pm and went down to 0 C by the time we returned at 2pm. Precip continued down the mountain and transitioned to rain at around the Cypress Provincial Park Picnic Area.

Hand pits down to about 50cm on an open southwest aspect at 1350m showed about 30cm of facets poorly bonded in some areas in others bridged at the surface by windslab. Felt very spooky on that aspect.
Northerly aspects sloughing of the top 15cm, not entraining much snow and not stepping down.
In general nothing moving naturally nor skier triggered.
Windy and stormy later in the day.

Reactive storms slabs

Storm day on Seymour. Heavy high density precipitation (graupel) and mod-strong SE wind for most of the day. Reactive top 15-20cm composed of the last 24hrs of storm snow sliding on the snow that had fallen over the days previous. Both naturals and skier triggered size 1s. Slabs would easily propagate. North Shore - Burwell Mountain

Observations from the northwest and northeast side of Burwell Mountain. Several very large and deep slab avalanches released during the heavy rains on the Easter weekend. Most likely from April 7 or 9. This area received over 400 mm of rain with two warm storms. The slabs likely released on deep weak layers near the base of the snowpack - crowns appeared to be 2-4 m deep.

Amazing St Marks

Skied trees NE of St Marks in boot-knee deep fresh powder. Coverage is thick and ski quality was all time for the North Shore. Polar, shaded and wind protected aspects skied best as there was no crust nor wind effect noticeable. South aspects had a supportive crust with 15 cm new snow on top and skied well too. We triggered a small 0.5sz storm slab at the start of the run with 15 cm thickness. Day started cold ish, then got progressively cloudy, windy and stormy. When we left the parking lot it was dumping, but 2C. If it stays cold, there's no need to go far away for top quality runs.

Deeeep on Hollyburn!

Fantastic skiing through the Hollyburn trees. Tons of new snow from the last 24 hours. Ski pen down ~60cm while skinning and pole probing alongside the skintrack to nearly 100cm. Pleasant and unexpectedly low density higher up.
Ski cuts on steep convex rolls and test slopes produced very easy size 0.5-1 avalanches down 30cm on the MFC. This reactivity was notable on all aspects. Fortunately no widespread propagation and not stepping down further. Certainly still enough snow to take a skiier for a ride and potentially cause injury. As such we avoided steeper terrain and enjoyed tree laps.

Skied from Cypress Falls Park all the way up Hollyburn Mountain via the 'West Cypress Creek Trail'. Surprisingly coverage was good enough to get in a 1000 meter ski decent, and we were able to ski right out to the parking lot of cypress falls park. No signs of instability for majority of this tour as the 30-50cm of new snow was on the ground, but once on Hollyburn Mountain sluffing was encounter on isolated steeper slopes.
