Bow summit

About 60 cm of base but has snowed a fair amount since the 4th. Good riding but could still use a bit more snow to cover some trees. Weak layer that failed on 3 shoulder swings.
nathanmkristensen, Monday 8th January, 2024 12:40PM

Crowfoot Glades

More snow than expected, snow was falling steadily all day and overall stable riding conditions. Some heavy sloughing from steep features.

Grand daddy scout

Went up to the lower slopes of Grand daddy to poke around and dig some pits. Thinking we would get a handle on the snowpack in the area and see how we felt. Surprised to see multiple groups heading into Grand daddy as we broke out of the trees. We saw 13 people at one point all heading up or in the line. Any hopes we had of skiing the line evaporated and we just dug some pits and watched things unfold.
bensoneff, Sunday 31st December, 2023 5:20PM

Jimmy Simpson Bowl

Took a stroll up jimmy junior - the area has seen a lot of traffic. All aspects we rode were crusty, tracked, and somewhat wind affected. Made for a mix bag of skiing. Dug a quick pit at 2180 meters - south east facing slope. Most noticeable result was a resistant planar failure on the facets at the bottom of the snowpack (70cms deep) on CT18. Otherwise, no other signs of instability.
dzioba, Saturday 30th December, 2023 7:30PM

Missed on the Mistaya Traverse

You thought Bow Summit was bad... Not enough HS to feel confident attempting to ski over the col. Significantly less snow north of Bow Summit - feels like November up there. Coreshot + faceplant season so we turned around at Cirque Lake. 10cm HS on the lake (frozen) and maybe 40cm HS everywhere else. Barely any snow roadside! Approach + exit on the hiking trail had some sporty moments due to lack of coverage.

Jimmy Junior bowl

Jimmy Junior Bowl. 50 cm HS @ 2300m with basal facets but very supportive. Didn't punch through & no rock strikes. Thin wind skin on most slopes but couldn't feel it under the skis once you got up to speed. No settlements or whoomphing. Surprising good skiing but all the low hanging fruit had been skied. Freshies if you are willing to climb higher than everyone else. Heavily tracked out in the lower bowl, needs a refresh. Ski out is in good condition.
todddundon, Friday 29th December, 2023 5:20PM

Crowfoot pass / glades

Day out to check out high five wall just passed crowfoot pass. Turned back for the glades due to Na activity and sheer lack of HS on skiable slopes in the alpine. Travel was mostly supportive . Skiing the glades was 60-80 HS, 15 cms of fist on supportive mid pack.

Crowfoot

Variable snow depths ranging from 40-120cm. Found deeper snow in higher regions.

Wapta Icefields - Dec 17, 2023

Wapta Icefields this weekend (Dec 17, 2023): Started at bow lake around 7 am. Lake was frozen well enough. The travel upto the hut was decent except for the valley and bowl just below the hut. Coverage was marginal here with many rocks sticking out. There was only one other party at the hut. Went past bow hut and on to the upper glacier towards Mount Gordon. The view was stunning. Can't beat these in views. In my opinion, the best winter views in the Canadian rockies. We probed here to gather at a safe spot to transition to downhill. I hit ground with every strike. My probe was going about 3/4 in before hitting the ice below (so around 150 - 180 cm where ee stopped). The snow up here was all wind blown and not pow snow. I still found the riding to be a blast and this run down to bow hut is just excellent.
tsa717, Monday 18th December, 2023 11:30AM

West Nile Tree Jail

Skiing at treeline and in gladed areas was excellent with boot-top powder and no notable crust at any elevation. However, access and egress were both difficult. There were many small trees in the slide paths which interrupted otherwise pleasant skiing. We noticed several whumpfs on flat/mellow terrain at treeline. As expected, needs more snow.
BubblegumOutlaw, Saturday 16th December, 2023 7:30PM

Give it Time

3 or more slides mid storm took out most of the bowl what was left was mostly very thin and/or windslab

Pow Summit!

It's been a long wait but it finally looks like touring season! Extremely deep pow day at bow summit, stayed in more mellow terrain & at treeline.

Small pockets releasing

Small pockets at ridgetop cracking and cross loaded gully released size 1 loaded by strong westerly.
iwelsted, Wednesday 29th November, 2023 9:38PM

Bow Summit

Given the marginal conditions with minimal base, some nice deep turns were had and we received around 12cm of snow over about 4 hours, snow fall picked significantly up as we got back on the 93. Shooting cracks and some shingling on any loaded/steep terrain. Did not witness nor trigger any slides.
jkblorefice, Wednesday 29th November, 2023 9:38PM

Bow Summit

Went for a walk with low expectations and were pleasantly surprised with conditions. HS was highly variable, up to 80cm at tree line, average of 45cm overall. Skied 3 laps of the far lookers left tree runs. Skiing is possible only in sheltered/lee features. Had 1 run with no rock or tree strikes. Ventured up towards dogleg and skied a mellow peice of the fan but found a reactive layer down 30-40cm as we got into a deeper snowpack (found up to 100cm) in the fan. This layer was spotty but the top 30-40cm easily sheared off in hand shears at this interface and we got cracking as we skinned over slight convexities. That was enough to keep us out of the steeper couloir. Lots of ridge top wind transport all day.
bensoneff, Wednesday 29th November, 2023 9:38PM

Ferris

Gorgeous day out! Decided to check out the Ferris glacier. Approach in actually was reasonable and the canyon skiable however observed numerous small slab releases on some of the canyon exits points failing to ground. ( which could be dangerous if swept in the creek). Further up hard trail breaking through trees and as expected very thin to the glacier. Ferris ranged from 40-80 cm coverage and skied okay but the views were stunning. Observed the crown of a large size2/3 under st. Nic failing to ice. Observed shooting cracks on any wind loaded slope immediate lee of a ridge. The ski down was ginger and use of rock skiis recommended

Bow Summit

Conditions report from Bow Summit on 11/19/2023: Firstly, I'll start with a disclaimer that I am very new to this and by no means a reliable expert in reporting backcountry conditions. I would welcome any feedback, tips or corrections. Secondly, some of this info may be already obvious to much of the group or anyone paying attention to weather, but I thought I'd share it anyway for those who haven't been out. Hopefully it is of some use to some folks. There is about 45-55cm of snow at mid treeline and just above, more on NE and E aspects than others. North/Northwest aspects and higher alpine are largely windswept and still very rocky. Northeast to Southeast aspects are more filled but also fairly wind loaded in several areas above treeline. There is a weak layer of facets from around 2cm-12cm off the ground (so 38-48cm down from current depth), that seem to be the main source of instability currently. A basic compression test revealed sudden collapse at 13 taps (3 from elbow), so moderate result. The snow from 15-40cm seems to be well bonded, likely all from a single weather event as I didn’t notice any obvious weak layers in that portion of the snowpack (but I could have missed it). There were several previous slides visible in the main bowl on the steeper NE/E ridgeline slopes, most of which were size 1 or 1.5, and one that looked potentially closer to size 2. I personally did not observe any whumps or cracks, but another party saw cracks while skinning higher up on the first ridge to the North. Most of the main center bowl (alpine) is only partially filled with many visible sharks (unsurprisingly). However, at the top of treeline and below there is definitely enough snow to make "good" turns. I was pleasantly surprised by the quality and depth of the snow (expectations were very low) and had several fun laps in/around the gully to the Southeast of the main bowl area (after the second ridge). For those looking for more advanced lines and deeper snow, it is best to wait, but I am easy to please and as such, was satisfied.
alavigne.al, Wednesday 29th November, 2023 9:37PM

Bow Summit

I decided to head up to Bow Summit again and see how far our snowpack had improved since I was there. Honestly, I don't see it as improving much, but there are a few things to note, good and bad. On average, there is about 35-40cm of snow. The deepest pocket I could find was just below 50cm. You could be walking on the ground in plenty of places, though. The snowpack has two lightly packed wind slabs; each is about 1/3rd from the top and bottom (so if the height was 30cm, these are found around 10cm and 20cm from the bottom). The whole pack is basically made up of facetted DFs, or at least everywhere I looked. The good news is those weak wind-packed layers keep skis from travelling on the ground. The bad news is that with only 40cm of snow, even a small rock or stump will end your season pretty fast. The turns can feel "good", but I don't trust it. The other bad news is the distribution of the snow over the larger area. Windward areas are basically dry rock. Direct lee areas are deeper but still just facets or windslab over facets. We also saw a surprising amount of natural avalanches starting in very dry areas, running off the ground and travelling further than I would expect for the current snow depths. The other good news is you can get some "skiing" in if you are desperate. The Tree Chutes and Roadside Bowl at Bow Summit have been heavily tracked, so at least you have a "base" now. Some of the tracks in Roadside Bowl were covered up by an avalanche that released naturally in the above terrain, and the area directly above most of the tracks hasn't released yet.
Marcus Baranow, Wednesday 29th November, 2023 9:37PM

No instability noted

Dead calm at Bow Lake for a change. Approacefaround north end of Lake and up to C-Train on Crowfoot north buttress, no instability of any kind noted. We avoided punching straight up the middle of the bowl below the climb , instead linked rock outcroppings. Easy to stay on rock most of the way due to wind-stripped slopes.
iwelsted, Wednesday 29th November, 2023 9:37PM

Pointless - ice

Cold leaving the car and around the lake where a breeze kept it feeling cold. We followed the shoreline trail as the lake wasn't frozen a week ago but there were plenty of skaters on the lake later. Thankfully there is a well established bootpack trail to follow because the bushwhacking is quite bushy at times. Two parties ahead of us and two parties behind us today. Had to wait some time to get on the route but very sunny and pleasant while waiting. First pitch has sun to mid day. First pitch is pretty good ice and getting screws is easy enough. Wet on the right but most people chose the middle. There is a nut and piton anchor on the left in a right facing corner hard to see as you top out. Second "pitch" is low angle with sufficient snow to more or less walk up to the base of the final pitch. The snow at the top seemed to be catching most ice fall today. Final pitch is steeper than it looks and longer. Everyone climbed the left side. Right side was wet with a lot of daggers and overhanging ice to get through. Middle looked somewhat more solid climbing but hard to protect. Left side was featured, hard to find screws without hitting air pockets. Lots of hooking with some fracturing and more pumpy than it looked. Consensus was that the last pitch was harder than the first. Aimless Gully I only saw the upper part which looked rather grey. Another person went from Pointless to Aimless, said there was a trail sideways, but that it looked grey and not as good as Pointless. Snow levels seemed relatively low and many slopes looked fairly wind scoured. Didn't observe any snow transport though and snow seemed stable without too much faceting below the route and some faceting on the route. We had trouble retrieving the ropes on the last pitch. The next party up said it looked like it was just friction through snow and around the rock at the top without any obvious problem but noted that our efforts to pull had damaged the one cord on the tree. I believe they removed the damaged cord. Someone had placed a thread in the ice further right just below the top out, possibly to make an easier rope pull. Would suggest first rapper down try a test pull to ensure you don't have issues.

Bow Summit

About 4-5” non breakable crust. CT15 failed at the interface between the melt freeze and the warm wet snow beneath it. We headed up the north shoulder and left early. The goal was to check if pacmans was doable but the snow hasn’t recovered from the previous heat cycle.

jmadro, Friday 12th May, 2023 8:40PM

West Nile Trees

Mellow day checking out conditions - 5-10 cm powder on firm and fairly supportive crust from the road. Decent skiing on descent, generally did not break through the crust. Several smaller wet slides could be seen in the alpine on both sides of the valley. Looked like another party skiied the Grand Daddy today or yesterday.

neverbenbetter, Wednesday 19th April, 2023 8:10PM

St. Nicholas and Mt Olive Col

The canyon up to Bow hut still has excellent coverage. Convexities in the alpine were touchy, surface wind slab was cracking off the ski. Above Bow Hut the snow on the glacier was good skiing. At 08:00 we observed an avalanche off the east face of Haddo Peak from the highway, Na, no obvious trigger, large powder cloud suspected size 2 or 3, hard to determine as we could not see the runout. Exiting the canyon, below the uptrack to Bow Hut, we passed a recent size 1 slab avalanche, down 30cm, around 15m wide, ran into the canyon, on a steep westerly slope.

Grand Daddy Couloir

Skied the grand daddy couloir this morning. A few old tracks but still skied well! Weather was cloudy with light flurries at times. Winds light. Bow River is still very well bridged. Included a few other terrain photos taken today: Hector approach, Andromache approach, Surprise Pass right, Aberdeen N glacier

mark.wizinsky, Sunday 16th April, 2023 2:30PM

Lil Crowfoot

Went up little crowfoot today and found fairly good ski conditions. Dry snow up high with crusts down low that had a sort of confusing distribution. Mainly I wanted to note that the snowpack on the glacier is very thin (to be expected this season) with 100cm to 260cm of coverage, median probed snow depths of 170cm. Limited visibility today but noted a few recent slabs on the west aspect of crowfoot mountain in thin snowpack areas that slid to the ground.

Persistent Weak Legs, Saturday 15th April, 2023 6:30PM

Crowfoot Glades

Rode the crowfoot glades. A definite crust on top in places where the sun shines, but in more sheltered areas the snow was pretty good. Lots of evidence of avalanches from the recent cycle.

karljparkinson, Saturday 15th April, 2023 5:40PM

Natural Avalanche Activity 93N

Further evidence of the widespread natural cycle observed today on highway 93N. Avalanches to sz 4 have been observed- many running full path. Many events involve "storm slabs" 25-40cm deep while others have stepped down to the deep persistent layers : January 4 and November 16 interfaces resulting in slabs 70- 150cm deep or more.

Bow Summit

Reasonable skiing at Bow Summit. Few people. Stayed off all terrain >25-30deg. Signs of older avalanches in many areas. 5-10cm of snow on crust. Crust at surface <2150, softer above 2150, even in the shade / on polar aspects. Temperature effect on snow evident everywhere below 2200

Grand Daddy

We headed up about 2/3 of Grand Daddy. Approached via the sluff / avy debris in the fan and then booted up. Ski crampons may be helpful. Most of the good snow was stripped from a larger sluff or smaller avy that seemed to initial from a cornice fall that had a crown of about 50-100cm from the terrain to the right of the main couloir. Pic included. The more north facing tree slopes at the base made for better skiing with no crusts to get back than the uptrack area.

Blue bird day on Crowfoot Mtn. Were able to ski up all the way to the top, although the last 15 min we were walking pretty gingerly near and on rocks. No avy concern today, but terrain was mellow. Snow was wind affected in some areas, ok elsewhere, and decent on the Ferris glacier. Lots of ski farming on the glacier! Cornices on the ridge were pretty small, canyon is in good shape.

Crowfoot Mountain

Small settlements in wind loaded pockets of inconsequential terrain on approach to Ferris Glacier. Glacier gear ‘went for a walk’ with us. Mainly good practice. Height of terrain and contouring on benches used to mitigate avalanche hazard. 500-750m bootpack to summit on wind blasted ridge. Main hazard sneaky rocks on descent, need to get skis tuned. No notables other than a great day

Little Crowfoot

Found a few good turns on Ferris Glacier and in the trees, but mostly sporadic wind affected snow and crust. Visibility wasn't the greatest, but didn't notice any signs of recent avalanches or instabilities. Didn't probe the glacier, but also didn't see any holes. The creek in the canyon has decent coverage. The walk across the lake at the end of the day is grim, as per usual. The lake itself is frozen over, but there are some spots in the gravel flats where you can sink into the slush.

Did a couple of laps of the main north facing slopes of Crowfoot Glades. Lots of tracks but good snow to be found still! No major wind affect in the trees, ski quality remained fairly decent.
