Alpine climbers - be mindful of avalanches while navigating in high-consequence terrain.
Now is the perfect time to refresh your avalanche safety skills - brush off the cobwebs and practice with your transceivers!
Danger is highest after new snowfall, rain, warming, or wind transport. Expect increased avalanche activity during these events and for up to 24 hours afterward. Use extra caution where slabs have formed over alpine ice. Conduct your own avalanche assessments, and always carry a transceiver, shovel, and probe - and make sure to practice too!
Watch out for alpine areas as they gain enough snow for avalanches over the next couple of weeks. Alpine bowls, gullies, and around ridgelines are classic spots for early season avalanches.
Many open crevasses are hidden by thin bridges of wind-blown snow. Roping up, diligent probing, and experience are critical for glacier travel.
