Snowpack Summary

Forecast moderate northwest wind on Monday may form new wind slabs on aspects that are generally windward. 3 to 10 cm of forecast snow Sunday night will add to the 10 to 20 cm of recent snow which sits atop a widespread crust.

In general, the crust is strong and supportive to travel below 1900 m. Above 1900 m the crust becomes breakable and tappers out entirely around 2300 m.

The mid and lower snowpack consists of various weak layers primarily made up of crust and facet combinations.

Terrain and Travel Advice

  • Recent wind has varied in direction so watch for wind slabs on all aspects.
  • Watch for newly formed and reactive wind slabs as you transition into wind affected terrain.
  • Even a small avalanche can be harmful if it pushes you into an obstacle or a terrain trap.
  • When a thick, melt-freeze surface crust is present, avalanche activity is unlikely.
