Cariboos
Noticed cracks in our skin line. No whumpfing. Signs of warming. Tree bombs and rollers. Sun warmed the peaks quickly was cautious of Cornice breaks. Great day
Nice day to check out the Yanks Peak area. A good amount of tracks around bur still fairly easy to find some soft snow. We had broken skies with intermittent graupel. No wind and cooler than previous days. No signs of avalanche activity. Trails are well groomed from the Barkerville side.
Cold snow underneath recently warmed wet snow. Observed one size 3.5 loose wet slide on a SE facing slope around 3pm, ran almost to valley.
The March sun felt great out in the mountains around Barkerville today. Along with the sun’s the warmth is an increasing affect on the snowpack this time of year. We checked out cornices and steep, solar aspects to see how they are taking the heat. Today stayed cool enough that we saw only loose dry avalanches from steep rocky terrain. Light winds haven’t been enough to redistribute the latest 10cm of snow into slabs so we enjoyed moving around under bowls, below start zones and in a variety of terrain.
Did not do a full pit just a mini to see what the layers look like. Had breaks at 10, 30, 40 and 45cm down. A very hard 5cm layer at 30 cm down. 1 to 2mm pointy facets between layers. 20cm fresh snow over night. Day time temp -1 warmer when the sun came out in the afternoon. Morning over cast afternoon evening mix of sun and cloud.
Today we went riding at Groundhog near Barkerville. We didn't see any new avalanches despite the 30 cm of new snow. If the temperature rises and or the wind increases this light, cold snow will form a more cohesive slab that will most likely initiate a widespread avalanche cycle. Until then, we will enjoy the faceshots!
Snow for most of the morning, around 2pm light freezing rain started. Overcast all day with alpine socked in very low visibility. 140 cm snow pack 20 Degree slope \ Temp -5 East Aspect \ Elevation 1814m CTE 1 15cm CTE 4 35cm CTM 1 45cm CTM 7 60cm CTH No result While digging our pit we noticed with the fresh now over the lat week the top layer is very unstable down to about 60 cm. The snow under that has really solidified and would not budge.
Total snow depth at 1950m was 85cm. Density was fist top 20cm then 4 finger for remaining 65cm to ground. Crust layer was felt about 15-20cm down on approach from 1200m elevation to ~1700m. Small surface hoar ~2-3mm crystals noted in sheltered location at pit site. Fantastic sunny Sunday skiing!!
3cm surface hoar
It was stormy and cold in the Barkerville area with around 7cm+ of new snow falling throughout the day. Strong southwesterly winds were blowing at ridge tops and building up wind slabs on lee north and east faces. We saw a (size 1) wind slab that had freshly released out of the bowl near the cabin, that was around 5-10cm deep. We didn't find any other avalanche problems or deeper layers of concern in the snowpack. The area could use a little more snow to improve the riding quality, conditions were still quite hard and tracked out.
