Strong - extreme winds and a wee bit of new snow will keep the avalanche hazard elevated Sunday and Monday.

A widespread avalanche cycle along the Icefields Parkway on Tuesday and Wednesday is evidence that the deep persistent problem remains a concern. Natural avalanches have recently stepped down to this layer, and many have been travelling well into below tree line run out zones.

Avalanche Summary

No new observations today due to limited visibility. Evidence of a widespread avalanche cycle on all aspects in the alpine was observed on Thursday. Mostly size 2-3 and up to size 4. Many of these avalanches started as wind slabs and stepped down to the deep persistent facet layer. Most notably the main Buck Lake slide path and the Churchill South slide path ran into the ski lines.

This recent cycle is evidence that we are at or near the tipping point for the deep persistent layer.

Snowpack Summary

Recent cold temperatures have faceted the upper snowpack allowing strong- extreme winds to redistribute recent snow. Ridgetop has been scoured in most locations with pockets of wind slab lingering in the alpine and at treeline.

In sheltered locations, 40 cm of settled snow sits on top of a generally weak mid and lower snowpack with facets and depth hoar at the base. The height of snow is variable from 60 to 160cm.

Terrain and Travel Advice

Expect slab conditions to change drastically as you move into wind exposed terrain.
If triggered, wind slabs avalanches may step down to deeper layers resulting in larger avalanches.

Problems

Wind Slabs

Wind Slab avalanches are the release of a cohesive layer of snow (a slab) formed by the wind. Wind typically transports snow from the upwind sides of terrain features and deposits snow on the downwind side. Wind slabs are often smooth and rounded and sometimes sound hollow, and can range from soft to hard. Wind slabs that form over a persistent weak layer (surface hoar, depth hoar, or near-surface facets) may be termed Persistent Slabs or may develop into Persistent Slabs.

Deep Persistent Slabs

Deep Persistent Slab avalanches are the release of a thick cohesive layer of hard snow (a slab), when the bond breaks between the slab and an underlying persistent weak layer deep in the snowpack. The most common persistent weak layers involved in deep, persistent slabs are depth hoar or facets surrounding a deeply buried crust. Deep Persistent Slabs are typically hard to trigger, are very destructive and dangerous due to the large mass of snow involved, and can persist for months once developed. They are often triggered from areas where the snow is shallow and weak, and are particularly difficult to forecast for and manage.
