Avalanche Summary

Earlier in the week, numerous natural and explosive-triggered wind slab avalanches up to size 2 were reported, primarily on northerly aspects in the alpine.

Looking forward to Thursday, riders should watch for fresh storm slabs forming throughout the day as new snow accumulates.

Snowpack Summary

15 to 30 cm of new snow will accumulate by the end of the day on Thursday. This overlies up to 30 cm of recent snowfall.

The recent snow overlies a crust on all slopes except true north facing terrain at upper elevations where the previous snow remained dry.

Many areas below treeline are either snow-free or have very thin snow coverage. Expect difficult travel at lower elevations.

Terrain and Travel Advice

  • As the storm slab problem gets trickier, the easy solution is to choose more conservative terrain.
  • Watch for signs of instability like whumpfing, hollow sounds, shooting cracks or recent avalanches.
  • Closely monitor how the new snow is bonding to the crust.

Storm Slabs

Storm Slab avalanches are the release of a cohesive layer (a slab) of new snow that breaks within new snow or on the old snow surface. Storm-slabs typically last between a few hours and few days (following snowfall). Storm-slabs that form over a persistent weak layer (surface hoar, depth hoar, or near-surface facets) may be termed Persistent Slabs or may develop into Persistent Slabs.
