Sky Pilot

Hoped for good conditions after the low snow levels on sat but found rain all the way up to 1700m. Clearly it had been windy on Saturday as some areas were stripped almost to the Dec 5 crust layer while others were loaded with 40-50cm F dry snow with 2-3cm slush on top. Triggered a small .5 wind slab in a steep roll while skinning up. Slid on the Dec 5 mfcr.

Anif Ridge Deep Powder

45cm of fresh snow within the last 24 hours made for very arduous trail breaking. Became slow going and near impossible to wallow through it along the ridge near the summit of Anif. Lots of big whumps on the low angle / flat terrain before ascending the ridge. No sign of avalanche activity and no slides triggered as we skied back down the ridge. Could do with more coverage for the small trees on the ridge and for the chutes to go clean.

Storm slabs

On our way up we saw evidence of the previous storm cycle with various crown lines up to size 1 (24-48 hours old). After skiing our line (on our exit route), a skiier triggered a size 0.5 while contouring around the base of a steep convex roll feature. Skiier was caught but not buried and there were no injuries. Release was a storm slab on a NE aspect at 1500m.

Stadium Basin

Some evidence of recent slides off of steep aspects around ledge basin and smaller ones in the stadium gullies. 8”-20” of light unconsolidated snow over a crust. Wind effected in places

dmmcleod, Wednesday 12th April, 2023 3:10PM

Sky Pilot

Poked just above treeline at Sky Pilot. Snowing at the upper lodge and accumulating fast above TL. New snow being redistributed quickly by strong S winds and surface in alpine is variable from scoured melt freeze crust to ~10cm of new on top. MFcr is ~4cm thick and supportive up high but barely refrozen and breakable below TL. Noticed Sz2 (photo) debris out of Cleavage Col and a Sz1/2 in Home Run. Both seemed to have run on Friday. No noticeable activity this morning.

Water skiing on Habrich Spur

Went for a walk to see how gross it would be and we weren't disappointed. Witnessed wet slides spitting out of the N facing gullies across from Habrich Spur and wet debris on Home Run. Skied corduroy back down and went for cinnamon buns instead.

meg.ob, Friday 7th April, 2023 6:00PM

Skyline Ridge

Played it safe along Skyline Ridge Trail, mellow slopes, super light powder, and stepping around creeks. Dry loose snow around 900m, breakable crust at approx 20 cm. Significant snowfall until 1030AM, scattered flurries until the early afternoon when the sun started peaking out. Snow became heavier on the ski out, and stuck to skins

To much smiling

Skied a few laps in the Tree Triangle. We found the top 5cm would occasionally sluff off, and the new snow below was stable and had not consolidated yet.

gilbert.pjb, Sunday 2nd April, 2023 5:10PM

The Hallway

Skied The Hallway off Goat Ridge today. Boot pack conditions were challenging with 60-80cm of boot penetration, and continual sloughs of graupel filling each step. Multiple soft slabs (Sz1 to 1.5) were released in the bottom of The Hallway, beaking below our skis.

Ledge Basin

We went to the couloirs around Ledge today, hoping to ski one of them. Unfortunately even on the alpine north facing slopes the surface snow was warm. There were regular large sluffs off all steep slopes. We chose not to ski the steep slopes. We also heard a few avalanches - tho we couldn't see them - possibly they were the other side of Ledge Mountain.

colin.n, Tuesday 21st March, 2023 3:20PM

co-pilot storm and wind slabs

Scary day -- skier-trigged size 2 on a N/NE 40 degree slope just below co-pilot peak. One skier was caught and knocked down but was able to regain footing and ride across the slope to safety. Previous group of ~10 rode the gulley with no problems; just reaffirms that you can't assume a slope or drainange is safe because someone else rode it without problems or because the avcan rating is only moderate. Significant wind-loading was apparent once dropping into the slope and so the skier immediately started cutting across to safety but was still caught when the slope slide on the ~3rd turn. Skier trigged a ~40 cm crown which propogated across the slope. In some areas that stepped-down from the wind slab to storm slab of similar size. You can see in the last photo some shooting cracks along the wind slab which stepped down. Wind loading was extremely variable and unpredicatable; we actually cut our objective short and tried to get out faster. Snow was amazing, of course, but very reactive. Felt a lot more like an interior snow pack than a coastal snow pack. We were expecting more consolidation but with the cold temps and wind the snow was a lot more reactive than expected. On reflection, we should have stayed out of the alpine where the winds were more aggressive. Treeline conditions were just as good and less reactive due to lack of wind loading. With last night's storm-slab now on top of these layers I expect significant risk in this area until these layers consolidate.

S2S gondi

Excellent riding s2s gondi. Busy day with dozens of skiers lined up at choke points on uptrack. Everyone played nice. Skied cold smoke on home run & exit gully. Recent Sa sz 1.5 wind slab ripped from the south aspect side-wall of exit gully, <48hr prior. Slope cuts produced easy soft slabs down 20cm. Dramatic solar & greenhouse effect observed when sun popped out around 1pm.

qturner, Monday 6th March, 2023 1:30PM

Shannon Basin

We skied through the McMur Trees for two laps and exited via Stadium Gully Left and lower Home Run. The snow was amazing in sheltered areas and the trees - the best powder of the season so far in this area (IMO). The snow in open areas was soft and slightly wind-affected in the morning but soft slabs were developing later in the afternoon as the wind picked up. Earlier in the day, we got Friday evening's storm snow to slide on a convex roll at the top of the small ridge as you head toward McMur Trees (see photo and location of this MIN on the map.) Also, just an FYI for those wanting to ski Cleavage, we saw a massive cornice overhanging the rock wall skiers right in Cleavage (sorry, no picture) from the up-track toward Stadium. The cornice over Exit gully also loomed large as seen from the uptrack through the trees beside Home Run. Powder on.

Justin Partridge , Sunday 5th March, 2023 7:40AM

Friday Freshies

Found unconsolidated dry powder down to 1100m in sheltered slopes at treeline and below in the ledge area and in towards stawamus drainage. Ski pen ~25cm, boot pen ... let’s just say don’t take your skis off. Observed sluffing in the top 10-15cm of most recent snow in steep terrain but no other signs of instability where we skied. Slopes that got a bit of sun wed/thurs in this zone had slightly denser snow from the day before with recent 10-15cm fist density on top. Still excellent quality.

adamrodrigues11, Friday 3rd March, 2023 11:30PM

Steep 'N Deep Tree Skiing

Phenomenal day of skiing on the sea to sky gondola. Evidence of multiple natural storm slabs were witnessed, likely from the previous day on the untrack heading toward Ledge Mountain. 7cm of snow covered most the debris, indicating things were very active the previous two days. Given these observations and the visibility we decided to stay in open trees. We started at very modest slopes and observed no signs of instability. Working out way up to steeper gladded terrain, we still encountered very light sluffing given the depth of the snow.

nevison.alex, Thursday 2nd March, 2023 11:00AM

Knee deep Mulligan

Shin to thigh deep. Rode SE facing steep dense trees after jumping on a bunch of test slopes and feeling it out. Zero signs of instability where we were. Saw a bit of sloughing under the cliffs on the north face of Anif. Then went a bit up east ridge of Anif and road down the mellow undulating terrain. On the short steep sections there was some sloughing but no slabs and didn’t run at all. Didn’t really have anywhere to run though. Snow overall was very light and no real signs of slabs except maybe a little bit down at the crust. I dug down in several locations to the crust and found the snow was not bonding well to it. Temps were rising as we rode out.

dkiyonaga, Sunday 26th February, 2023 10:30PM

Shannon Basin

We skied a few laps through the steeper sections in the Triangle Trees and the snow was excellent once you were well sheltered. Light powder ran fast on 40-degree sections through the trees but didn't seem to gather much mass and was easy to manage. In exposed areas, the snow stiffens up to a range of soft to hard slabs with highly variable snow depths down to the crust from last week. Hand shears on a SE aspect around 1550m in open trees released very easily on a crust about 30cm down. The block that released was planar with about 15cm of soft slab and 15cm of powder on top.

Justin Partridge , Saturday 25th February, 2023 6:10PM

Storm incoming

Poked my head into the Skypilot moraines. Weird upside down snow, likely rain soaked from yesterday. Graupel on top. Temps were dropping quickly, winds picking up to mod/hard and rapid snowfall - super low visibility. A one and done type walk!

adam, Tuesday 21st February, 2023 2:30PM

Stadium Glacier

Climbed Stadium Glacier and skied back down from the Sky Pilot ridge. Mixed bag, ranging from compact snow, zipper crusts of increasing resistance, then solid ice at the top. Wind and cold increased once in the alpine. From two hasty pits, recent storm snow sits on a crust approx 25cm down, but we didn't experience any reactivity.

karmicitch, Sunday 19th February, 2023 8:30PM

Mulligan

Cheeky report from top of Mulligan Riding was surprisingly quality, below 1000m was west coast concrete, but above we found good powder Essentially no wind all day, did not notice any wind effect on the snow At the summit, we probed 280cm, with a solid crust 35cm down. New snow sitting on a pane of glass. Did not notice any slab formation and wasn’t able to get anything to slide on this Noticed formation of surface hoar throughout

jack.d.casey, Saturday 18th February, 2023 8:30PM

Ledge Trees and Stadium

Nice day out for a loop through ledge basin and then up and out stadium glacier. Morning started off foggy and warm (maybe this led to the formation of another 5mm rime crust, reminiscent of last Sunday), but the sun came out as the day went on, and temps were dropping as we left. The snow in the ledge trees area (1200-1500m ESE) was less effected by the breakable crust but was heavy and getting wet in the sun exposed slopes. One small 4m slab in the recent storm released accidentally by a member of the party. Stadium glacier was beautiful but capped in the crust. We heard some whumpfing while crossing a flat but wind effected area (~1650m NW) chose to only ride low angle, supported slopes. Overall, observed lots of sluffing and point releases in steep terrain that likely happened Friday.

adamrodrigues11, Saturday 18th February, 2023 6:20PM

Sea2sky gondola

About 25cm of fresh snow from the start of the skin track in the old growth forest. The new snow is on top of supportive crust and got a bit heavier later in the day when the sun came out. We only ventured to about 1650m and skied wind protected slopes. We saw some dry loose small sluffs on the steep slopes from today.

Romski, Friday 17th February, 2023 5:40PM

Gondola

Snowing all day improving the conditions. Snow was dry all day at gondy top. Light wind at TL

Jean Philippe DeVaillancourt, Thursday 16th February, 2023 9:50PM

Dust Crust

Skied up to treeline below Sky Pilot. Visibility was poor and it was snowing. The skiing was surprisingly good with 10+cm of new snow sitting on top of a thin yet supportive crust. The new snow was starting to sluff in steep terrain but not gathering any mass or running very far.

forecaster, Thursday 16th February, 2023 8:50PM

S2SG

Skied around the S2SG today and found a crust from Feb 12th's warmup at pretty much all aspects/elevations. On the road, there was dust on saturated snowpack. 1200 to 1500m was a thin, breakable melt-freeze layer over quite a bit of fresh snow with 5cm fluff on top. 1500m to ridge top was a firm, supportive 5mm ice crust. Lots of icy rime on trees and rocks at ridge crest. Pockets of fluffy snow made for fun skiing among the boilerplate sections but no notable windslab. Sun was just occasionally peeking out for moments but was strong when it did!

Eric Carter, Monday 13th February, 2023 3:30PM

MF'n crust everywhere

3cm overnight, easily breakable 5mm MF crust all aspects... Only made it to 1460m don't know if it goes away at higher elevations

rob.morrison.h, Monday 13th February, 2023 3:20PM

Sleet Sheet

As we ascended in the morning, there was a light rain/snow/sleet mix falling. A thin breakable crust (<1cm in most places) capped the otherwise soft, settling storm snow on all aspects, from about 1200m to as high as we skied (~1600m). It was thickest in open areas and less noticeable in the trees, which held the best riding quality of the day for us (surprisingly good in places). It was foggy above with flat light so we avoided alpine terrain and are unsure if the crust persists higher up. No signs of instability observed. Wet snow started at the top of the gondola as we left around 4pm.

adamrodrigues11, Sunday 12th February, 2023 8:20PM

Above Shannon Basin

Skiing above Shannon basin was excellent today. We found powder in sheltered areas with soft slabs higher up above the entrance to Cleavage. Hand shears along the way gave resistant and non-planar results on density changes and a few jumps on convexities produced no cracking. We did notice a natural size one above the skin track on the way to Ledge Trees (see photo) around 1 pm. It looks to have run 30m down a steep (45+ degree) chute and was mostly unconsolidated surface snow.

Justin Partridge , Saturday 11th February, 2023 7:50PM

Sea 2 Sky

Conditions about 1400 meters were excellent. Fresh snow was really good once visibility cleared

jmcconville, Saturday 11th February, 2023 6:00PM

Ledge Basin

Skied trees from the ledge saddle down to the basin, and then back through tree triangle to the skin track. We found good powder from 1300m-1500m but did not venture into the alpine. In and out of the clouds all day.

gabrielrobinsonleith, Saturday 11th February, 2023 3:20PM

S2S #2 and Spur

Skied #1 on the EC map and then over to spur and back to the road. Despite hazard being considerable, we saw minimal instability. We were able to cut a few small slabs on convexities but they didn't really carry, the new snow seemed well bonded. We did see cracking on the skin track. Snow above 1300m was decent and got progressively worse the further down we went. A MIN report from last week in the area mentioned death by a thousand alders and this is a very accurate description of the approach. Lots of creek crossings and bushwhacking. Similar fun on the way out as many of the drainages aren't filled in. Travel was generally slow and wet. Later in the day we started seeing some massive tree bombs on the way out.

rjohnston, Monday 6th February, 2023 3:40PM

Stadium Glacier

We skied up to stadium glacier and did a few laps through the left gully, the trees near the up track, Moranes left (#6 on Eric Certer's map), and Home Run. On the uptrack at about 1500m, a hand shear on a 40-degree NE-facing feature gave resistant but planar results down 40cm on a crust. At 1700 meters on a north aspect, we found wind-affected surface snow and 60cm of snow over a very thick crust. Sking down to 1600m along the Moranes east of stadium gully (#6 on Eric Carter's map) on a sheltered N aspect, we had one skier accidentally trigger a small slide of 20cm of storm snow that ran a few meters. The crown was about 5 meters wide and broke along a convex roll. Unfortunately, we didn't get close enough to see the bed surface or take a picture (sorry!). Home Run was filled in at the top but freezing levels were around 1350m and the snow was really heavy.

Justin Partridge , Sunday 5th February, 2023 6:30PM

Heavy Pow + Wind Slab

Some wind Slab present in the alpine, especially on cross loaded slopes. Set off one small Slab in cleavage couloir as pictured. Snow below 1400m quickly turns to the heaviest of mashed potatoes

blogan7420, Sunday 5th February, 2023 3:30PM

Squamish is hot garbage

At 1300m snowing lightly at 0900H, at 1100m rain at 1400H. Fp boot top at 1650m, overcast all day with light wind . Frequent s1 natural activity in steep open terrain with sun exposure. HST 20-30cm. Very warm new snow on old hard melt freeze crust. Skiing was pretty bad and sticky!

swskier, Sunday 5th February, 2023 7:20AM

Sky Pilot

Sky pilot tour to 1800m. Variable snow with a thick 2-3cm crust. Tough skinning conditions through tree line. Visibility was poor. Pit results: • 140cm - NW aspect - 1730m • CTL 8>20 - Plainer • CTH 24>44 - Plainer Same result recorded twice with little change between taps.

ah1792, Tuesday 31st January, 2023 3:30PM

Ledge Basin - Stadium - Cleavage bowl

Skied in and around Ledge basin and Stadium glacier. Gunsight couloir was mostly firm snow or ice crust with some wind deposited snow. The best skiing was in sun protected N facing slopes that weren't too steep.

Goat Ridge Whumpfing Observed

rlynne223, Sunday 29th January, 2023 10:20PM

Goat Ridge

Variable conditions on the north facing couloirs off Goat Ridge. The road in from the gondy was death by a thousand alders and just as many creek crossings. The snow in the couloirs was icy refrozen sun crust with a few pockets of chalky wind affected slab. Would I recommend it to anyone? Probably not. Did we have an incredible day out? You betcha!!

gabrielrobinsonleith, Sunday 29th January, 2023 8:00PM

Sky pilot area

No signs of recent avalanche activity today. Conditions were variable, wind effected and sun effected some some patches of OK snow. We skied towards sky pilot and down the one of the large chutes below stadium glacier. Some hoar frost was noticeable in tree areas on the valley up. Conditions were generally chalky and variable. North facing non sun affected slopes were better skiing than other aspects.

robdonovan, Sunday 29th January, 2023 6:20PM

A mixed bag of mostly good skiing

Skied a variety of terrain around Co-Pilot, Skypilot and some of the Ledge Couloirs. The skiing varied greatly by aspect with a thin wind and temperature crust in shaded bowls. Lots of pinwheeling on south aspects. A great inversion but with cooling temps coming it could get rugged out there as the warm snow locks up. Also, lots of surprising moats forming around rocks in steeper terrain and although cornices are not huge, some are starting to detach! Play safe

campbelladam79, Thursday 26th January, 2023 9:10AM

Shannon Basin Tree Triangle

Skied 3 laps down the Tree Triangle by Exit Gully. A 5-10cm reactive storm slabs was sitting at ridgetop. This storm slabs disappeared within a couple meters of dropping off the ridge. Snow in the trees skied fantastically. There are still creek holes showing on the alder path in and advanced survival skiing is required on the way out.

gilbert.pjb, Sunday 22nd January, 2023 8:20PM

S2S Gondola Couloirs

Great day at the S2S gondola, managed to get up Ledge and most of Gunsight. Turned around just before the top on gunsight due to wind slab concerns, which we noticed at the top of ledge as well. Way more snow than expected in the lines, the rain crust was buried anywhere from 50cm to 2m deep. Hard work putting in the boot pack, but amazing ski conditions in the lines. Ski out was super manageable as well.

willzittlau, Friday 20th January, 2023 8:10PM

Sky Pilot Access

Sky Pilot Access road was groomed this morning at 8am. All the cross ditches have been filled in except for about 50m where water was running down the centre of the road. I pushed in the creek crossing at the snowcat turnaround area but be careful later in the day as this melts out a bit. We had 22cm's measured at the Summit Lodge yesterday morning with another 5cm falling throughout the day on Wednesday. Temps cooled off last night and the snow firmed up quite a bit.

robwalter73, Thursday 19th January, 2023 9:50AM

S2S Gondola/Stadium Gully

S2S Gondola, Stadium Gullies Overcast and snowing lightly. Light wind from the SW. Below 1200m the snowpack is isothermal with trace new snow on top. 1200 and up, thick mid-Jan mfcr with 30cm HST. Travel in the trees is challenging with minimal new snow making it through the canopy and tree bombs/icy debris. Above treeline, travel is easier with HS 235cm at 1380m. Freezing rain zipper crust developing in open terrain @ 1560m. Never got above the crust. Most paths appear to have slid nearly full path during the rain event including Exit Gully and Cleavage Col size 2.5.

Eric Carter, Tuesday 17th January, 2023 1:40PM

Sky Pilot Access

Open creeks all along the access road. We didn't go up to the alpine, but there was visible open creeks on the headwall as well.
