Snowpack Summary

New snow will fall on old windslabs and a faceted midpack. There is a thin crust 20-30cm below the surface, as well as a notable 5-15 cm thick crust near the base of the snowpack, surrounded by facets above and below. Snow depth in the alpine is approximately 70 cm but varies greatly due to recent wind effect. Traveling through TL, the snow tapers off quickly with elevation.

  • Avoid freshly wind-loaded terrain features.

Problems

Wind Slabs

An icon showing Wind Slabs

Previous snow and strong winds created wind slabs in alpine lee areas and on wind-loaded features. These slabs may be sitting on a crust at the base of the snowpack, which could increase their potential for triggering. Be mindful of newly formed windslabs if the winds start to increase.
