Avalanche Canada GL, Avalanche Canada

All melt no freeze... and natural avalanche activity is expected to continue.

Summary

Confidence

High

Avalanche Summary

Widespread large loose wet and slab avalanche activity is occurring in the region. The main pulse of activity has subsided yet consider anything that has not slid to be highly suspect.

Post avalanche observations to the MIN.

Snowpack Summary

Many slopes at all elevations are isothermal and loosing cohesion particularly solar aspects and shallower snowpack zones. Depth hoar and basal facets at the base of the snowpack still exist until the warmth can penetrate fully.

Weather Summary

The next three days will remain sunny, very warm temperatures, no overnight freeze, and 3800 metres freezing level.

Terrain and Travel Advice

  • Only the most simple non-avalanche terrain free of overhead hazard is appropriate at this time.

Problems

Loose Wet

An icon showing Loose Wet

Warming temperatures will continue to produce wet loose avalanches.

Aspects: All aspects.

Elevations: All elevations.

Likelihood

Certain

Expected Size

1 - 3

Deep Persistent Slabs

An icon showing Deep Persistent Slabs

The bottom of the snowpack is inherently weak with well-developed Facets and Depth Hoar. These avalanches have the potential to reach the end of run out zones well below tree line.

Aspects: All aspects.

Elevations: Alpine, Treeline.

Likelihood

Likely

Expected Size

2 - 4

Wet Slabs

An icon showing Wet Slabs

As the warmth continues to penetrate and soften the snowpack, wet slabs are more likely.

Aspects: All aspects.

Elevations: Alpine, Treeline.

Likelihood

Expected Size
