Avalanche Summary

This MIN report submitted on Thursday from the Shames area describes snow transport and audible avalanches occurring.

Reports have been limited, especially in areas near Terrace. Please consider submitting your observations to the Mountain Information Network.

Snowpack Summary

More precipitation and strong southwesterly winds in the forecast are expected to continue building fresh storm and wind slabs throughout the night and into Saturday.

Storm slabs will be building everywhere, but will be particularly reactive on north and east facing slopes near ridgetops.

Around 50 to 100 cm of recent storm snow may be overlying variable snow surfaces, including small facets and/or surface hoar in sheltered areas and heavily wind-affected snow in exposed terrain.

A crust from early November can be found down 80 to 120 cm. Below this prominent crust are several other crust layers from October.

Terrain and Travel Advice

  • Don't let the desire for deep powder pull you into high consequence terrain.
  • Avoid avalanche terrain during periods of heavy loading from new snow, wind, or rain.
  • Avoid exposure to overhead avalanche terrain; avalanches may run surprisingly far.

Avalanche Problems

Storm Slabs

Avoid avalanche terrain, especially during stormy conditions when natural avalanches are expected to be running. The largest and most reactive slabs will likely be found on north and east aspects.
