Blow Me Away

It was a windy day at the Grizzly Plateau, with some new wind slabs being built at ridgetops. Good visibility into surrounding areas showed no new avalanches. We spent most of the day working on the weather station fixing the glitchy snow sensor, but still managed to squeeze in an hour of riding afterward. We found some nice soft powder to play in in sheltered spots in the trees and cruised in the alpine checking out the views.

Metamor-posing

Today we sledded around the Grizzly Plateau. We didn’t see any new avalanches, but we did find wind slab on top of our concerning layer of weak, feathery crystals buried 70 cm deep. When we dug on the flats in the treeline, we experienced a very large whumphf, which was the weak layer of buried surface hoar collapsing under our feet. This gave us a heads up to avoid any steep or consequential slopes as this layer collapsing on a steeper slope could result in a large slab avalanche. It was still snowing in the morning but then cleared up, with about 10 cm of new snow total. In sheltered areas there is some soft riding to be found but any exposed areas and the alpine terrain up on the Plateau is very wind affected from previous southwesterly winds. The wind stiffened snow is not very good riding.

Sunshine and wind slabs

We saw a few avalanches today at the Grizzly Plateau that were triggered by yesterday's strong southwesterly winds. These avalanches were all wind slabs that pulled out of steep alpine east faces. A couple of them also triggered additional slabs when they hit treeline. We suspect these failed on a weak layer of surface hoar down around 25cm.

Big, Bad & Beautiful

Lots of sparkles out there today. The new surface hoar is growing big, bad and beautiful - over 15mm! The old surface hoar from last week that is even bigger is buried around 35cm deep and is quite reactive in our snowpack tests (ECTP 15). The team spent the day setting up the weather station for the winter so we didn’t get a chance to see much terrain beyond.

Its Grim Out There...

Its pretty dismal out there at the moment. Only 35cm at the Meat Cache sled cabin and even less up on the windswept ridge in the alpine. The riding needs at least another big storm or two to fill everything in. Poor visibility in the fog meant we couldnt see any signs of avalanches. There is a wide spread layer of surface hoar growing. Lets hope we get more snow soon!

Tropical Telkwas

Today we rode in the Telkwa's. Temperatures were warm today with a high of plus 3.2 degrees at 1600 meters. Snow was moist on all aspects up to 1800 meters. Riding quality was poor with a variety of conditions from old warm snow at lower elevations to hard old windslabs in the alpine. Cornices in the Telkwa's are massive and have began to shed naturally with the warm temperatures. We observed multiple wet loose avalanches to size 1 on solar aspects.

Telkwa Time machine

Today we rode in the telkwas. There was 10-15 cm of low density snow and moderate southerly winds through the day. We could still feel the old rain crust from Jan 25th beneath the 40-60 cm of snow we received over the previous storm. During compression tests we were able to get moderate and hard sudden planar results on the Jan 6th surface hoar/ facet layer down 75cm. We had non propagating results during extended column tests on the Jan 6th surface hoar/facet layer also. Visibility was limited but we observed no new avalanches.

Wet and windy in the Telkwas

Today we rode in the Telkwas. We had a temp of 1.8C at 1650 m. There was poor visibility, strong southwesterly winds and occasional light rain. We dug on an east facing slope at 1700 m and found 115 cm of snow. During an Extended Column Test (ECT) we had propagating results during moderate loading steps on the Dec 23rd facet/surface hoar layer. We observed no new avalanches.

Howson Range

10cm of new snow on top of a firm consolidated layer. Avoided north aspect slopes. Moderate wind transport above treeline. Didn't see much recent wind transport below treeline. Didn't seem as windy as forecasted.

Timless day in the Tewklas

Today we rode in the Telkwas. 20cm's of fresh HST was overlying the previous interface with no wind effect at any elevation. Wind remained light through the day. In testing we were not able to produce any significant results in ECT and CT tests. We did notice a layer of size 6-9mm Surface Hoar down 20cm from the snow surface and another layer off size 4-6mm Surface Hoar down 30cm. The Dec 23rd Facet/Surface hoar interface was down 50-60cm and appeared to be rounding.

AvCan Northwest, Friday 13th January, 2023 4:40PM

Bluebird day in the Telkwas

Today we rode in the Telkwa Range. There was a new layer of surface hoar size 7-10mm present on all aspects and elevations. During snowpack tests we were able to locate the Dec 23rd surface hoar down 30cm from the snow surface. We had moderate sudden collapse results during compression tests and but no propagation during extended column tests. We observed no new avalanches.

Telkwa temperature test

We went to the Telkwa Mountains today to do a little maintenance on the weather station and to see what the previous outflow winds have done to the area. We saw no new avalanches. The previous strong NE (outflow) winds have really scoured any exposed features leaving lots of bare ground and hard surfaces. In sheltered areas the old snow is faceting due to the cold temps and there were pockets of reasonable snow. We found the total height of snow to be very variable, at the top of treeline it is anywhere from exposed ground to 150cm. We completed some snowpack tests in a profile on an E aspect at 1650m. We had a propagating Extended Column Test(ECT) result in hard taps 45cm down on a layer of small facets. Above these facets is a thick layer of knife hard snow. The hard older snow is acting as a strong bridging layer but we will still be tracking this facet layer below, especially with new load coming this weekend. Temperatures have warmed slightly, to -22, which still made for painful bare handed working.

Fun with electricity!

today we installed a weather station in the Telkwa Mountains! This station will provide snowfall, wind and temperature data. We spend most of our day setting up the weather station and had little time for observations. What we did observe was trace amounts of snow acculmation through the day beginning to bury widespread windslabs in the alpine and tree line.
