Wolverine ridge to biwl

megan.baxter7, Saturday 6th January, 2024 8:50PM

Purple Bowl

Good day at Purple Bowl. Snow was better than expected. The steep slopes on the exit had all slid at some point as they were snow covered today. Made for a little tricky exit but manageable.
jason_bil, Saturday 6th January, 2024 5:20PM

Purple Bowl

Purple Bowl was as expected. Variable snow conditions. Low tide, wind affected snow near the top. Throughout the entire ski down the snow consistently changed between hard, crusty top layer or nice soft turns. One minute you would be enjoy a few nice powder turns and then run into a hard surface crust/ice. Weather was very nice for temperature, -2 degrees as a day time high. Light winds at the 2,650m and a mix of sun/cloud all day. We skied North aspect.
cdvermette1, Wednesday 3rd January, 2024 9:50AM

Wolverine Slide

Looks like a skier got caught in a small slide on Wolverine Ridge. Snow on the ridge was generally powder on a supportive base. There were also hard wind slabs near the top of the ridge, and a band of facets where the supportive layer seemed to temporarily break down halfway down the slope. It looks like the slide occurred at the same elevation as that facet layer.

Corral

Skied some of the more mellow slopes in the Corral area today. Fun fast powder skiing. Dug a quick pit at 2350m, SE aspect, HS 80cm. ECTP28 down 50cm on facets. Not much of a crust present in the pit. Exit from Corral was reasonable.

Deception Pass

On Saturday, Dec 16, we skied up the Lake Louise ski out (adequate coverage for skiing up and down, but certainly thin) and out the trail toward Skoki Lodge. The winter trail is in good condition, with enough coverage to avoid any rocks and bigger branches. There are are few willows poking through, but nothing hazardous. The track over Boulder Pass is windblown with some sand and small rocks, but avoidable on the way up and down. The track up to Deception Pass is good, and on the east side of the pass there is good snow in some dips and hollows to provide nice turns with no rocks. We saw no indication of avalanche hazards on the mellow leeward slopes of Deception Pass. The ice crust is still there in the snowpack, but wasn't creating any instability where we were skiing. It is still early season out there, but there is enough snow for a fun day out.

Helena ridge

Good Skiing conditions. No whumpfing or shooting cracks. Snow pack got really shallow around the summit with some exposed rocks, but was good everywhere else.

Helena or HelleNo!

Explored the Helena Ramp, needed some exercise closeish to home. Let's see, long slog in through facet's, sun crust, frozen tracks... so many frozen tracks, icy uptracks, thin snowpack, break through facets? (best part of the ski down), hidden rocks and scree, luge track out. XX'ing out this page in the guide book till my memory erases from my consciousness. I should know better sorry team. Oh yes, no signs of any instability in adjacent slopes.

Whumpf there it is

Thought we would take a look, and see how chokestone was coming along. Day was way colder than originally forcasted, -22° in the parking lot. Warmed up as the morning progressed, maybe hit -7° in the sun. Then a sudden shift back down to -25° by tower lake. Heard the first whumpf at the base of Eisenhower when I stepped off the uptrack on a flat. 2nd one happened as the made our way to the foot of the bluff between the two lakes. Found a sheltered south facing slope, around 22-25°. And stepped off the uptrack to see if anything would move. Immediate collapse of the surrounding slope, remote triggered the one rock roll feature 40ft away from us. Looked like 2 of the layers were reactive. Decided to call it a day at that point, didn't need to see chokestone that badly. All in all, a beautiful day to take the skis for a walk

Wolverine Ridge

Multiple avalanches observed on SW Aspect of Redoubt Mountain from Wolverine Ridge. Some Whumpfing and cracking at elevation band of ~2340-2370 on NE aspect of Wolverine ridge while skiining. Here the recent snow from the past week was sitting on facets making for very difficult travel. Below 2340 m the midpack was supportive and ski conditions were good.

Helena Ridge

Cloudy day on Helena Ridge, very windy and cold in the alpine. Great skiing from 2200m-2500m with 15cm powder over firm slab, from 2500m to the summit was wind scoured and icy. The dense trees at lower elevations had heavy, punchy snow which made the descent quite spicy. Ski out is fast but with relatively good coverage, only a few exposed rocks/tree stumps. We heard a natural avi run around 10:30, but weren't able to get a visual on where it was. May have spotted a crown off the NE aspect of Castle Mountain but I'm not certain due to the clouds

Skoki

Spent Wed Feb 15 - Fri Feb 17th at Skoki Lodge. /// Feb 15 was cold, sunny and generally calm. At Boulder and Deception Passes, winds have blown away much of the snow and areas adjacent to the trail have exposed rock and ground. However, ski and sled traffic (as well as trail packing) has hardened and preserved the snow on the route itself, so no issues were encountered and we were able to keep skis on the entire time. We observed a few 48+ hour old natural avalanches (see photos) en route to the lodge. /// On Feb 16 we skied some conservative low-angled lines south of Skoki. The day was cold, with increasing cloud and winds, and snow beginning in the evening. Coverage was generally acceptable, with powder found on sheltered North facing slopes. Trail breaking was a mixed bag - ski pen was +/- 5 to 10cm and with the occasional step, members of our party would sink knee-deep into facets. Foot pen was in the range of 60-100cm through facets. /// We skied out on Feb 17 and enjoyed some low-angled turns on a ramp immediately to skier's right of Deception Pass, where the snow had been sheltered enough from the wind to be preserved. The day was mostly sunny. A fierce head wind was encountered from the top of Deception Pass and across Ptarmigan Lake, but this died down once we descended from Boulder Pass. We had a wonderful time despite the less-than-spectacular snowpack and are already daydreaming of a return trip. /// Included numerous photos of the Skoki trail and surrounding area for beta.

Fun lines on Helena

Great mellow turns to be found on Helena! Midway up the snow was fairly faceted underneath. Once above treeline the wind slab is as crusty as a ski resort managers butthole, but that crust was pretty thin. A quick probe with the pole showed a bunch of soft loose snow underneath the crust with a super solid layer about 10cm down. We stayed on pretty mellow sections without any significant overhead hazards. As another MIN had mentioned the snow gets really shallow and crunchy a few hundred meters below the ridgeline but you can find good turns not far below it. Powder was surprisingly good overall.

Wolverine bowl

We stuck to mellow slopes and would often sink into the snowpack while skiing. We dug a pit, the compression test results were CTM - 11 - SC (down in the facets). Lots of facets and pretty rotten snow.

Corral shoulder

While doing AST 1 course we had one whumpf while skiing down. Stuck to very mellow terrain. Had sudden collapse, and no results from compression tests. Snow quality was unsupportive due to deep facets

Chockstone couloir fan

Skinning up Chockstone couloir to see how it’s filling in. Near the choke of the couloir we felt a small whumpf followed by a massive whumpf and shooting cracks propagating from a thin snow covered rock across the slope 10m above skier. Felt like the entire snowpack settled on the basal facets. 1cm fist snow wind skin forming in open areas. Observed a new natural dry loose 1.5 across the valley on the way down at 1315. Apx 2350m elevation ran 35-40m on a S.W. aspect. Sky was broken precip nil winds light and variable with an air temp of -2.4.

Upper Wolverine Valley profile

Skied up Wolverine Valley to ridge crest with the intention of avoiding all terrain steep enough to avalanche. Beautiful day with some moderate W winds on the summit ridge. No fresh avalanches were observed except for some small sluffs on south-facing steep faces near rocks. Snow profile at treeline shown here. Skiing down from treeline down was almost unskiable - or at least, survival skiing at best. Every turn you blow through to the facets at the base of the snowpack.

Helena Ridge- needs more snow

We skied for the views today. Blue bird day :) Snow depth about 40cm at the bottom of the ridge to 0cm at the top of the ridge. Ridge was wind scoured with slabby sections of snow barely covering rocks. Snow lower down was dry and loose. We were able to ski to the top and very carefully ski down. We stayed in the trees on the way down following our up track to avoid rocks and deadfall. The rockbound lake trail down was fast and well covered.
