Not enough to make it better

South Rockies

We spent the day exploring, so we didn't make it up into the alpine, but a few sunny breaks gave us a chance to look for recent avalanche activity, and we saw none. The Racehorse weather station recorded 17 mm of precipitation, and we found 10 to 15 cm of settled snow that is bonded to the previous crust. The crust was not completely refrozen, so you could punch through it with boots. There was no wind, so no snow was being transported around. Dry snow is likely prevailing at higher elevations on north-facing slopes, but you will be mostly riding on one of several crusts in the upper snowpack.
