Quick Observation
Checked out the Blunt on Saturday. Sled pen was easily 40cm but ski pen on the skin track only about 10-15cm, making for pleasant travel once our group of novice sledders parked and started walking. Observed strong wind affect in the alpine, with numerous size 1-2.5 slab avalanches on all aspects, older than 24 hours and many crowns filled in wind transport. Observed one mega cornice break that triggered below to rip to ground (see photo) - we estimated the crown at over 2m, which is notable for the Bulkley Valley! Surface hoar forming (1-3mm) in treeline to alpine. No signs of instability underfoot while skinning however when the sun was strong it started to cook the top layer of snow on solar aspects, which skied great for a lap (springy!!) but we avoided those slopes for the rest of the day. I’d anticipate an intermittent sun crust today. We kept it pretty mellow and cruised enjoyable low to moderate angle slopes in the sun and little trees. Added bonus, the cut blocks at the bottom skied fantastically!
