Quick Observation

Spent the day in Sand Creek today. There was 30cm of settled snow from last Saturday's storm. MIN reports from earlier in the month let us know that the surface hoar layer from January 17th was observed in this area so we dug down and found it down 50cm. As we traveled through the terrain there was no signs of cracking or whumphing. Tests results from our profile were in the hard range but had a sudden fracture character. We did observe an avalanche on an unsupported terrain feature that may have been remotely triggered sometime this week. These clues coupled with a Special Public Avalanche Warning for this region led us to avoid steep terrain, convex rolls, and terrain traps at treeline.
