Chickadee Crispy Crunch

Gordon Gilbertson, Wednesday 23rd October, 2024 9:32PM

Decided to give chickadee a look see, Climbed alongside one of the paths of Boom, it was late in the day so I did not have time for more than a very quick look. Just under 80 cm of snow depth at just over 2000m. About 17cm of fluff on top of an icy crust. Seemed like several thin crust layers with less dense layer between them, then fairly dense but crystally stuff to the bottom. You could break the top layer with some effort while up tracking and get an OK track, but if you did not put in the effort then you would just push the fluff off the crust and not get anywhere. Ski down was better than expected, the fluff was enough... but it was pretty noisy. A chunk of cornice came off across the valley off Whymper, not sure it was much more than a cloud when it reached the slopes below, the lower slopes did not react.
