Down low on 2000 ridge

lisalarson00, Thursday 2nd March, 2023 7:30PM

Avalanche Summary: No observations due to poor visibility. Our group suspected overhead hazards of cornices and wind slab development at upper elevations in open terrain features and selected low-angle sheltered terrain. Storm snow started settling at the end of the day with cracking off the front of the ski. Snowpack summary: 20 cm of low-density accumulated over the past 24 hours added to the 20 cm of soft snow accumulated earlier in the week totaling 40 cm. This most recent snow sits on an old wind slab that is bonding to previous surfaces. (Resistant and breaks snowpack test results). Well-consolidated mid-pack with total snowpack depth at treeline 280 to 300 cm. Weather: Snowfall throughout the day, heavy at times, accumulation 20 cm. Moderate to westerly winds with strong gusts. Treeline temperatures -5 °C.
