We spent the day North of Sparwood checking out the distribution of surface hoar (feathery crystals on the surface) following the recent inversion. We found very large nacho sized crystals between 1600m - 2000m. We also found it above this elevation but it was smaller averaging 20mm in size. These large feathery crystals sit on various surfaces. A sun crust on steep south facing slopes and softer snow on more northerly facing slopes. There was no new large avalanches today in this area but our snowpack tests indicate the bottom of the snowpack is still weak and has the potential for human triggering where the snowpack is shallow.
