Circumnavigating boom.

michel_labrie2003, Sunday 23rd January, 2022 8:20PM

Set out in chickadee valley with no real objective in mind. Made it to the bottom of the cirque in the back of the valley, found wind hammered hardpack and 15-20cm windslab releases scattered around the bowl. Lots of slab evidence up high, ridgetop winds looked to be extreme to ludicrous. Probed 185cm, temps well below freezing. Decided that sucked so back down valley and up to Boom col. Climbing SW slopes was pleasant and easy, thin sun crust had not broken down with temps still below 0 around 1130. Broken cloud and light winds for the climb. Approached top, upper bowls had size 1.5’s, windslab in a larger cliff feature no step down, and solar pinwheeling stepped to the 15-20cm slab in confined gully, ran to top of runout. Lots of point releases on S-Sw slopes, no major slabs. N facing ski to Boom lake was hard packed, mostly uneventful except for some great powder for the last 150m in sheltered trees. Clouds kept the sun at bay most of the day
