High risk day

pkaye, Saturday 8th February, 2025 10:38PM

An amazing day of 40 plus cms that had fallen overnight and the subsequent high avalanche danger due to the high snowfall and also lots of wind transported snow on top of the 28 cms that fell 2 days ago. All this on a thaw/freeze/rain crust that is now 70 cms below all this new snow! The snow depth was 105cm at 1980m early this am on E Peak but we could not attain the ridge because of the low stability of the snow pack: whumpfing galore while skinning and the temp was rising that the heavy snowfall turned into ice like fog that created a crust on the surface by late morning and all our gear was encrusted in a layer of ice. Test slopes were cracking and sliding on anything over 30 degrees! So just skied below 2050m on the gentle slopes and nothing below any steep upper slopes as today is the type of day one could be taken out even in the meadows if near a transition zone
