Today we went to Little Sands/Powder Cowboy for the first time this season. We weren’t sure what the access would be like and we haven’t heard many reports from people venturing out that way, but decided to give it a go and pass along the info to you guys.
If you know the area, we parked just before the tin shed, however travel beyond that was still extremely poor (for maybe another 1km? ish?) Once we reached the snow line, the access road had good coverage.
The day was mild, with a high temperature of -1 at 1850 m and calm wind. It was snowing lightly on and off throughout the day. As happy as we were to see dribs and drabs of new snow, we still found surface hoar (up to 30 mm in size - yikes!!) at all elevations and aspects. Although the 4 cm of soft snow that is currently covering the surface hoar isn’t enough load to currently be a hazard, things can change quickly and we are extremely aware that he avalanche hazard will increase as more new snow falls on the buried weak layer.
Conditions around the Little Sands/PowCow area are still quite crusty, making for challenging skiing. We hope you are still doing your snow dances and praying to the Griz. We are all in this together!
