Quick Observation
Observations: Spent the day lapping the Syncline Bowl and was pleasantly surprised by the overall snow quality and conditions. Ascents followed the ridge, which was heavily affected by wind. The ridge travel featured firm, wind-scoured surfaces with clear evidence of recent wind transport. Descents were primarily through treed terrain off the ridge and into the bowl. These areas were very well protected from the wind and held soft, settled snow throughout most of the day. Skiing conditions in the trees were consistently good, with supportive turns and no notable variability until later in the afternoon (~1pm). No signs of instability were observed for the majority of the day. There was no cracking, collapsing, or sluffing noted during earlier laps. On the final lap around 13:00, slight surface cracking was observed while turning on wind-loaded features. These shallow cracks appeared to be limited to recently wind-deposited surface snow and did not propagate or produce any moving slabs. Weather / Wind: Wind effects were evident at ridge top, with clear transport and scouring. Treed terrain remained well sheltered. Avalanche Activity: No natural or skier-triggered avalanche activity observed. Summary: Overall, an excellent day out with better-than-expected conditions. Wind-affected terrain was confined mainly to exposed ridges, while sheltered treed skiing remained soft and enjoyable. Minor surface cracking late in the day suggested localized wind loading, but instability appeared limited and manageable with terrain selection.
