Quick report

The persistent weak layer is still slightly reactive to testing and is found all the way around the mountain. Again, persistent weak layers can be very unpredictable and extremely dangerous. Taking caution on slopes greater than 30 degrees and avoiding trigger points is key for avoiding a persistent slab avalanche. We also have many areas in the Snowy Range with moderate to heavy wind-loading both direct and cross-loading. Again, these trigger points are tough to predict so caution should be taken on slopes greater than 30 degrees on the down-wind side of the mountain. And just to make things more interesting, as temperatures continue to increase, we can also look forward to wet loose avalanche potential, on sun exposed aspects, as well.

Snowpack

The snowpack depth in this area is around 195cm. There are multiple layers within the snowpack here but I found 2 of primary concern. The upper layer of concern was a very thin MFcr with buried surface hoar directly on top of it and did react during the ECT. The next layer of concern is our Feb 10 persistent weak layer. There was little reaction on this layer during the ECT but did propagate during the PST. ECTP23@165cm up. PST48/100END@121cm up
