We ski toured up to Corbin's Pass today. A breakable 2 cm sun crust, formed by a warm and sunny day yesterday made for terrible skiing on south-facing aspects, but dry powder remained on east-facing slopes. We dug a pit on an east-facing aspect at 1700m and found a surface hoar layer down 30 cm which produced moderate sudden planar results in tests. The early December crust was down 150 cm in the snowpack, with large facets above producing a scary result in a propagation saw test which can be seen here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Paq-lNjt2lY We will definitely be travelling with this deeply buried weak layer in our minds by keeping our terrain travel conservative, especially with more snow in the forecast for tomorrow ❄️.
