Avalanche Information

Accidentally skier triggered avalanche on west facing slope on Mt. Dauntless near Quartz Creek. This was a very mellow slope measured at 28 degrees slope angle. While skiing the slope for the second time this day, the slope cracked under my feet and immediately propagated almost the entire width of the slope. Crown depth was approx. 40cm. Appears to have failed on surface hoar. The low slope angle caused the avalanche to lose momentum quickly and it only ran approx. 50m before stopping. If this was on a 35+ degree slope, it would have been a dangerous and destructive avalanche. Very alarming how unstable the snow was, given the low slope angle. Equally alarming is the MIN report from January 18, Ski Cut Avalanche in Quartz Backcountry. This was in the Chuting Gallery across the valley from Mt. Dauntless. This is a mid-30's degree slope that showed similar instability. The top 50cm of the snowpack around Quartz Creek at around treeline is very unstable. Travel with extreme caution on open slopes and in sparse trees.
