Watchtower

Darcy Ruddy, Wednesday 23rd October, 2024 9:32PM

Great day up watchtower. We experienced a mix of all sessions. Temps started below zero in the parking lot and remained below zero Intell the afternoon when The sun came out. The snow stayed winter-like as we were on a north-facing slope. As the sun poked out in the afternoon you could feel the surface snow changing quickly. We found two small natural WS avalanches in steep N facing rocky terrain on adjacent mountains. As we approached the top the course was the largest I have ever seen it. Normally the cornice is small and mundane and you can ski right over it and stand on top for lunch and switch over. As the slope underneath is very low angle, I tried to get thru the small part of the cornice. When I approached the cornice I set of a small WS. It was very small and didn't move very far at all maybe 15feet. It was still enough to take me off my feet. We had a fresh 10-15 new snow with little wind effect. The mid-pack was supportive with ice layers. Great day of skiing
