Early Season Tour – Apostles Area (Near Aboe Summit)
Rode mellow slopes from 6400 ft to 5400 ft. Skiing quality was good above 5700ft with creamy coastal powder, about 20 cm ski penetration. Some soft slabs present near treeline.
Weather warmed through the day, resulting in wet snow below 5700 ft.
At 6000 ft, snow depth measured 120 cm. Dug a snow profile: generally well-bonded snowpack with a 5 cm wet granular layer ~60 cm down. No clean shears observed.
Observed three natural avalanches that occurred during the storm on Cowboy Ridge on west facing slope at 1900 meters , one size 2.5 slide that ran to ground, with an estimated 80–90 cm crown.
Experienced a few small whumpfs at 5600 ft on an east aspect in sparse trees. Snow settling rapidly with warming temps through the day.
