We headed out to Paddy Peak today and ski toured in steeper tree line terrain. 3cm of new snow covers a preserved surface hoar layer up to upper tree line. The upper snowpack still has 30cm of sugary facets on old wind effected surfaces which makes for challenging uphill travel. Above 1100m we encountered breakable crust. The best riding was below the breakable crust where the sugary facets are still providing good turns. Weather wise; warm temps (-3c @ 1100m.) and no wind. When the sun punched through for a few minutes you could feel the effect on the upper snowpack. Around 1300 the weather rolled in from the south and visibility decreased. It was Snowing less than 1cm per hour and with no wind by 1430.
