Quick Observation
It was all about low-angle terrain today at the Torpy. With touchy, widespread weak layers under 80 cm of new snow, we kept our terrain choices very conservative. We saw a new avalanche well below treeline on a steep rollover among sparse trees. We gave ALL steep slopes even those in the trees a wide berth and stuck to slopes <25ยบ or small features where we could manage our hazard. The winds hadn't done much except a bit of movement on alpine ridge lines but many of the open meadows were amazingly deep. It felt like we had all kinds of weather today with a bit of sun, clouds, and snowfall scattered throughout the day. It certainly was a day to be careful, but also an amazing day to be out on the sleds!
