In Redoubt Bowl, almost up to the rock band, there was about 20cm of powder on a firm base. Frequent pole test didn't show any major weakness. Once we started into the chute, snow conditions had changed. There was some wind loading on both sides of the chute that were forming a soft slab. Some pole test here showed a hollow and shallow base. Hand shears were showing planar results about 25cm down. We chose to head for the dry ridge, bootpack up in the rocks, and take a conservative route down. We skied the ridge staying in the lower incline area near the rocks. Near the bottom of the ridge, the second rider triggered the slab just as he was cutting back into our safe spot. We let the slide go down and then made our way through the narrowest part of the chute.
