Crystal Ridge

wseah, Sunday 8th December, 2024 11:00AM
Poked around Crystal Ridge area today, staying TL and below. Best snow was found in sheltered trees, 10-30cm unconsolidated powder on top of crust or firm mid pack depending on aspect. Wind effect was noted in open areas, with hand shears failing easy with 20-30cm wind slab. Had a few 1-2m wide slab releases around our turns in thin rocky areas, and very glad that we stayed away from anything steep. Still plenty of sharks out, with the new storm snow hiding many of them. Will probably need this recent snow to settle with another storm before you can ski in the boulder fields without worrying too much about your gear. Ran into another party that had made it all the way to the ridge, and they described the alpine as still very thin.
