Mt Haffner

Coverage down low was good enough although more snow wouldn’t have hurt. The new growth is worse than last year, we did a barely tolerable amount of bushwhacking while a bit off route. With the fresh snow from the trees falling on us this was definitely the crux. There was a temp inversion, -17c at the car, -4c at the summit, and -7c back at the car. Almost no wind in this area. Mostly cloudy. Found surface hoar lower down. Ski quality was mostly good to great with a few sections of crusts on steeper southern slopes. Trail breaking was mostly reasonable with about 15cm of ski pen. Skied from the summit, avoided all steep slopes/convexites and thankfully didn’t have an encounter with the deep persistent layers which were on our mind all day. Some ski tracks from near the summit of vermilion after what looks like a cornice drop that didn’t step down, see photos. Nice day out with some great skiing, with nobody around.
