Skoki Backcountry

mfmaster, Saturday 8th February, 2025 10:38PM

3 days of touring in the Skoki area. On the way in Apr 5 we saw large sloughs on E aspects in the afternoon (size 2-3 off the East face of Mt Richardson). Pit at 2350m on the shoulder of Redoubt mountain NNW slope, HS 355, CT17 RP 45cm down, CT18 drop SP 55cm down. Skiing NNW and N aspects gave great suppportive skiing with boot top powder through packers pass to the lodge. On April 6 we saw no new avalanche activity, but significant warming and sun effect, even slightly S facing slopes to 2300m were getting very wet in the afternoon. CT @ 2280m NWW aspect (moraines above Merlin Lake) HS 140 CT0 (clear drop with cutting the block on 2 attempts) @45cm, upside down snowpack with ~10cm of storm snow, a 1finger slab to 45cm with fist facets underlying to ground, we chose a very conservative retreat, a decision reinforced by a whumpf as I skied down from the pit. Another pit at Merlin Meadows 2060m SSE aspect HS155 CT14 Drop SP down 70cm on facets. Significant warming April 7 (my thermometer broke on a ski pole on day one, sorry for the lack of detail) with overnight slab avalanche activity to size 2/2.5 on steep N and E aspects. We also saw lots of sloughing during the day falling on E slopes without triggering too much below. A bit of good skiing around Deception pass but as we finished the snow was getting very heavy.
