Corn snow and early afternoon avalanche hazard

Larry Stanier, Saturday 8th February, 2025 10:38PM

Mountain Conditions Report

Good freeze last night on Mount Jimmy Simpson and likely in the whole Waputik range. We used ski crampons from the meadow at the base to almost the summit as the surface was rock hard. On the summit by around 9:30 am. Still frozen surface on the 1st slope from the summit but as soon as it turned even slightly south it was corn. Great skiing till down into the scruffy avalanche runouts/bushs. Still skiable but at 10:30 am it was starting to get punchy and you had to ski carefully to avoid dislocating some part of your anatomy.

Several long fracture lines visible from the highway from the past 24-48 hrs. All nasty looking slabs around 50-100cm deep and obviously triggered by the daytime heat and solar radiation.

Bow Lake was still skiable around 11 am but I would not venture out on the ice without a good freeze and good light. Not much water running in the creek but it is bound to start deteriorating fairly soon.

Larry Stanier
ACMG Mountain Guide
