Hector South Ridge

Marcus Baranow, Saturday 8th February, 2025 10:38PM

Went back to Hector South Ridge to get some value out of our skin track from yesterday. Did 3 laps from 2500m to 2200m before skiing out. Same basic conditions as yesterday (see previous MIN) but we did see some other groups trigger some very small size 1s (roughly 1-2m wide, running 5-8m) out of isolated unsupported terrain in the area we were skiing (short pillow wall like feature). These pockets going in the trees seem to only have this storms snow on it, crowns were 40cm and under was 5-10cm of facets on the rocks. (picture 2/3). Across on Hector South Peak a party triggered multiple size 2s. The size 2s looked to be remotely triggered and ran into the drainage terrain trap, deposit looked fairly deep but hard to tell from where we were. 2 tracks leading up to it, 2 tracks leading out of the area. (picture 3/3) The alpine above the solar alpine bowl on Hector South Ridge got skied by 2 parties today, it was reported to be thin but enjoyable snow. The same aspect beside this line (steeper feature) has slid, not sure if it was multiple individual avalanches or a single, almost 1km long one. We did not go high enough into the alpine to see the full extent of this avalanche (picture 1/3).
