Metal Dome glacier

mjcasson, Monday 22nd November, 2021 8:00AM

We travelled mostly on North and Westerly aspects from 1650m-1950m. Height of snow varies from 100cm on exposed features to 260cm in deeper areas. Had a great day out and found some nice snow. Low angle was key! Observed lots of old avalache activity up to size 2.5 in the Alpine that ran in the last rain event/storm. 10 CM of snow sits on top the Nov 17th(ish) rain crust where not effected by the westerly wind. Otherwise, a mix bag of scoured crusty surfaces or loaded pockets of wind slab from 10-40 cm deep. Within these pockets A few easy hand shears popped off fresh wind slabs 10cm thick. This sits on older firmer winslab below. The bond of the new snow to the crust appears to be ok. However, besides wind effect, the 10 cm remains unconsolidated. Nothing was reactive to skier traffic although we didn’t go looking. For the most part, the snow felt pretty stuck on except for a few wind skins. The crust is supportive to skis on most moderate angled slopes, but becomes breakable on anything steep or around 1700m and below. We rated the hazard for the day moderate/low/low with windslab possible up to size 2 in alpine lee features on North through East aspects. This is just our now cast limited observations.
