Fantastic day skiing the south ridge on Thar on New Years Eve. The temperature at the trailhead at 8am was -14C, and rapidly warmed throughout the morning to around -3C at 11am at ~1780m. There were several slides (size 2) visible in the bowl below Nak that had likely ran naturally during the last storm cycle. (included a photo, but the quality isn't great). We dug a pit at 1780m, S aspect, and observed very stubborn results from both a compression test and extended column test. ECT produced no result, with a resistant break on the new storm interface down 55cm at 24 taps, but did not propagate any further than shovel width. The compression test showed similar results with a resistant fracture in the hard range (25) down 55. The Dec 15th crust is visible in the photo down 110cm, but produced no results. The sun baked the slopes all morning/afternoon while we were there, and the storm slab could be felt becoming more cohesive throughout the day. We observed several natural, loose slides out of steeper, rocky terrain. Our sluffs also intiated some small point releases that were slow to gain momentum but ran relatively far. All in all, great day out. Happy new year!
