Quick Observation

Snow down low was very wet (lots of glopping both skinning and skiing). At our high point around 1400m ski quality was quite good, but still on the heavy side. About 40cms of new had fallen in open spots but the trees had stopped much from accumulating in denser areas. Temperatures rose through the day with snow in the lot when we started turning to rain by the time we left. Down low there was a notable layer of ~5cms of denser snow about 10cms below the surface, with lighter snow below.

Avalanche Information

Remote triggered a Sz1 storm slab avalanche while skinning up to a small feature in the boulder field below Hanging Lake. We hadn't heard any whumpfing or seen significant cracking in the trees up to this point (nor had other groups we spoke to). A whumpf at my feet travelled to a small roll about 15-20m away where the slope fractured. The slide went down to the most recent crust. We didn't investigate further but felt more whumpfing later in a cut block and nearby on an open slope, suggesting that there may have been a small layer of surface hoar in play in open terrain. I also encountered surface facets on the North Shore recently, though I hadn't skied near Whistler so can't say if they were present here too.
