Incident

A skier triggered avalanche ran Wednesday night during the major storm event here in Prince George on the bank above University Way. The fracture was 40cm deep going right along the top edge nearly the full width of the bank (250m). Heavy storm loading was the main contributing factor running on the older snows that have been sitting for some time on the slope. There was signs of cracking in the storm snow noted on the way up the bank. The avalanche gained some momentum, (running over the sidewalk and, in places, onto the road) but the skier managed to ride it out and no one was hurt . The big take home is this slide was not in the alpine or in the backcountry but within city limits.
