Matier Gl Area

peternave, Saturday 8th February, 2025 10:38PM

Skied Slalok N Face and Heart String today. Observed previous sz 3 storm slab on Matier NW face, estimated 24-72 hrs old. Based on location on the slope and tracks retreating back along the approach route we estimated it was skier triggered but didn't approach Matier to get the details. Also observed sz 1 skier triggered slab on Spetch NW face, bottom of slope skiers right. Cross-loaded pocket, also appeared 24-72hrs old. Neither were specifically reloaded but occurred between end of day yesterday and the last snowfall. Previous skiers on Slalok had triggered a sz 1 and sz 2 storm slab off the summit and onto the West side of the Stonecrop glacier, the larger of the two ran most of the glacier. We skied nearby their tracks today and easy to moderate hand shears revealed a right side up slab 4F-1F+ down less than 20cm with a 3cm low density layer of storm snow below. This slab is suspected to be the previously reactive layer for the old avalanches observed. Today at 2500m it came out only between tracks in isolation. At 2000m on Slalok N face snowpack structure was very similar but without the low density weak layer. No reactive ski cuts or new activity all day. Mild temps with a mix of sun and cloud all day. Some power flurries. Crust forming on everything but true North.
