Sutton Peak
Vancouver Island

Snow level started around 1000m. Lakes still mostly frozen but starting to thaw in areas that see sun. We attempted to climb Sutton Peak but with a massive ice cornice blocking our path we chose a safer gully to the saddle. Snow was wet and soft but saw no signs of instability on north facing slopes. A large chunk of the cornice broke off late in the morning and we watched a small avalanche fall off the cliff of a south facing wall.
