Snowpack

North aspects in this zone above 8,000 feet harbor over a 1 meter (3ish feet) snowpack, while south aspects still remain shallow (60cm or less even at 8,500'). Most recent avalanche activity was observed on N-E aspects, with some very large recent avalanches occurring on snow from December. A stout rain crust around 2 feet deep was observed in snowpits up to 9,000 feet, and likely make a large avalanche hard to trigger here, but not impossible. Very weak snow exists at the base of the snowpack and propagated in snowpit tests for deeper layers (PST, DT, ECTP33). Time will help determine the outcome of two prominent weak layers (2/2, less significant, and 1/4, more significant but deeper). Taking into account recent natural activity, human-triggered avalanches are still likely on many slopes and steep slopes on the north half of the compass should be given a wide buffer zone, especially with larger natural avalanches noted less than 48 hours ago.
