The wet snow with a rain crust didn’t leave us feeling too confident on our hut trip so we dug a little pit instead! Saturday there was about 10cm of fresh snow, we didn’t half a lap but it was icy and we were getting some cracking and saw lots of wind effect. Super warm temps Sunday leading to a wet top layer. Under that was an insane crust, super thick and strong but with very large crystals and a very weak layer underneath.
The top layer moved after about 5 elbow taps but didn't move as a unit, just kind of crumpled.
The layer below was a challenge to get to fail but it was so dense and hard that we thought it would account for a terrifying slide!
You will see we have photos of the junk of layer two that came off in one swoop.
Pit dug at the bottom of sunny side at tunnel creek.
