Ice - Radioactive Beagle

Grant P, Saturday 16th January, 2021 10:50PM

Approach: More hill than it looks. A travelled trail is established to follow although can be a little rough in spots. The track initially go up to an unnamed short steep flow. Said to be W4 but short. To get to Radioactive Beagle, looks for tracks that traverse over. We went to the unnamed W4 first then came down and over to RB. Our descent came directly downhill and I have to wonder if going left and up different terrain to below Rock On might be easier. Only a guess. Snow: I don't know how much snow the area got in the big dump but this sunny aspect has probably seen a lot of snow melting. Its currently about boot top deep. There is a very thin loose dusting on the surface over a crust. Below that is a crust sitting over sugar snow. The crust would break fairly easily when a trekking pole was stuck in it. As we left i noticed pin wheeling on the skiff of surface snow. Unnamed: Short but steep. Hero swings and screws were reasonable. We left some webbing on a tree up and left because no other rap station was visible. We also walked up the snow slope above the ice to see if there was any more. A very short W2 step lead to dry ground and no more ice visible. If you wanted to avoid the steep line you could take the right side that is shorter and easier looking but I have no input for conditions or quality of pro. Radioactive Beagle: Although in nice shape, we were wondering where the other 20m of this reported 40m climb is? Perhaps under the snow at the base? A single rope would suffice and no need to carry half ropes up there. There is a bit of an older v-thread about the same height a two pin station. Wr added a mallion to the rope on the pins. This was a great spot to climb in the sun today. The Unnamed climb started getting tree shade around noon. Similar with RB I suspect but with the shade being from the rock beside the ice. I've already forgotten about that hill though.

Weather Report

Clear skies and sunny in the am. Clouded over by the time we left sometime after 3pm. Winds were a little brisk but nicely light.
